On Halloween … an Halloween …

… I go for a walk in the Dark Woods…
… gehe ich in die Dunklen Wälder …

… looking for spooky creatures and lost souls.

Fog banks sail across the sky …
Nebelbänke ziehen über den Himmel …

and the branches sway like spirals in the moonlight.

Booh! Here they are, the ghosties, dancing to silent music!
Booh!

The moon sheds it's pale light on a hazy chorus line of ghosts.

Mysterious flowers bloom on the forest floor …
Eigenartige Blumen blühen auf dem Waldboden …

… and flights of bats pattern the sky, sailing away into the Halloween Night …

And here's the whole collection, hope you like it! I was aiming to create a collection with a Halloween mood, leaving the theme it a bit more open at the same time – so that it would go along with anything a bit spooky and mysterious. I really enjoy spooky moments from time to time, and guess there are some more dark souls around who feel the same …

Halloween Inspiration

Autumn inspiration from the studio and beyond
Herbstliche Inspiration im Studio und rundherum

It's that time of the year again! I have always been in love with autumn, be it warm sunshine like today, or howling wind and rain. Or the soft and spooky fog that comes up often from the river in October and November. Very in tune with the season I am working on a Halloween collection. Here's a bit of my surroundings that inspire these designs – and a little peak onto my drawing table.
Although Halloween is no german tradition I love working on spooky things! It's just the perfect project for someone who lives right underneath an old castle and who's degree project was illustrating the story of Count Dracula!
And I am really happy that at least I will be able to show this Halloween collection on the blog as soon as it is ready. My Indigo designs are still for sale with Believe Creative Studio so unfortunately I cannot publish them …

Now it's all done and dusted. I've been back from Paris for two weeks now, but it took a while to sort everything out! Now here are some nice pics and some tales from Indigo, too …

Smiling faces in front of the fair / Strahlende Gesichter vor dem Messeeingang: Miranda Mol, Bethania Lima, Annette Plummer (from left to right/ von links nach rechts)

Indigo Paris 2012 (Fashion Edition) was my very first trade show in the field of surface design, and it was certainly a great experience! Difficult to say what I remember the most, there was so much to see, and so much eye candy! I really whish I could have brought home lots of photographs of the stands, but obviously, that's forbidden. So all I have are my words to tell about it …

But first I want to say that I really enjoyed meeting my fellow designers at the fair – with some of these people I have worked very closely together in the last weeks, but I had never met them "in person" before. There was an immediate feeling of solidarity and understanding, I liked it very much – proof that the internet can really CONNECT you! Never would have thought that possible before this experience.

Felt so good to meet up with all the fellow designers/
Super, endlich die Designkolleginnen in Person kennenzulernen:
Virginia Kamau, Miranda Mol, Bethania Lima, Annette Plummer, me/ ich, Veronica Galbraith, Susan Driscoll, Wendy Kendall (From left to right, please click on the names to find out more about them!/ Von links nach rechts, für mehr Infos einfach auf die Namen klicken! )

The Believe Creative Studio stand was an eyecatcher! Rosie Martinez-Dekker is showing the collection, including our designs!

And it sure was exciting to see the stand of Believe Creative Studio – with our designs! – and to meet studio owners Rosie Martinez-Dekker and Vincent Dekker. And I can proudly report that I had sales :-) Not on a big scale, but it feels great anyway! Thank you again Rosie and Vincent, for taking me on board and making this possible! Can I say that I am a professional Surface Designer for real now? Can't help to feel a bit this way, although I think it is more or less luck to bring the right buyer with exactly the right kind of taste and a matching project in mind in front of your designs … There are so many great designs altogether in such a show, and I guess lots of really good ones won't sell. I would love to know the percentage of sales – maybe 10% of all that is on offer? That's only a guess! But it could be even less …

To speak of numbers, the amount of designs was just unbelievable! At first, when noticing that Indigo is only a small part of the whole PremièreVision fair, I was a bit disappointed. But seeing the stands and the large piles of designs on them, I quickly changed my mind. A lot of designs were on fabric samples, and sometimes the huge piles looked a bit like rummage tables. But when you looked closely, most  pieces were oh so delicate and special. It was a bit like finding a missing link for me: to see the designs applied on fabric makes it so much easier to decide if I like it or not. It's the material quality and the haptic of the different kinds of fabrics that I really miss with computer printouts. On the other hand, such a design applied on fabric is far more "committed" and it must be very expensive to do all these fabric samples!
It was interesting as well to watch the sales teams on the stands: they went through the designs very quickly, just showing them for a sec to the buyers, and then moved on to the next design, and then the next one … Didn't like this so much, but later on we got explained that the reason for this was the fear of copying. Quite understandable then. This is not an easy market at all!

A well needed rest: Miranda, Annette and Bethania. Lots of people enjoyed the sun in the patio. I liked the informal atmosphere.

In means of what's on trend we all felt that there was a big tendency towards handdrawn and even handpainted designs. Obviously, subjectivity and the individual feel of the handmade is very valued and maybe a kind of counter-trend to clean vector computer designs. I guess this doesn't mean that it's no good to do vector designs, but it seems to be imporant to make them really personal and "human" in feel. Some stands presented pretty experimental and artsy stuff, too, which I LOVED! Again with all these observations one has to be careful: we don't know how much of the very unusual and experimental designs really sold. But I personally would certainly LOVE to see surface design developping in that direction!

Now, that's just a short and very personal impression of Indigo – hopefully I managed to share a bit of the atmosphere, the bounty and eye candy with you. It certainly is worth a visit, and I hope I can see the show again, maybe next year!?

And I'd like to add that we had lots of fun, too, see the proof in the following photographs!

We had lots of fun! Spaß hatten wir auch!
Miranda, Annette and me/ und ich.

And here's a little addition to my post, posted later after a fun conversation about the above pic between Annette, Miranda, Bethania and me ;-)

This is the reason why we are laughing! Published by special permission from Annette (who did the picture) and by Bethania (who's in it). Here's Bethania's original comment: "A braver photographer, who takes whatever it takes to make a great shot!!!" Thanks, Annette and Bethania!
