Hello pattern, hello fabric!

It's nice to look at this part of my work again! It's been quite a while … The reason for revisiting pattern design is another contest, the Minted "Fabric Frenzy" challenge. Minted is looking for a wide range of designs for homedecor (both kids and adult) and kid's clothing.
I'll be featuring a small selection of my submissions here in this blogpost. If you'd like to see all of them, feel free to look at my "Voting now!" page, I've listed everything over there (18 patterns in the whole).

Like always with Minted competitions, the selection of designs goes by public votes or by editor picks. So if you see something you like, please just quickly click on the image! That'll lead you directly to my submissions on the Minted page. Thank you so much! Voting is extended until Monday, October 2! (Please note: If you are not a Minted customer already, you'd need to set up an account on Minted to be able to vote.)

"Ocean Garden"

As I love anything that has to do with the sea, and especially the amazing beauty of underwater flora and fauna, designing these two patterns was very much my cup of tea. Both pattern were done for homedecor. "Ocean Garden" above is a handpainted watercolour pattern, whereas the elements of "Ocean life" below were done with papercuts. Both patterns would work especially well in maritime/ beach house style homes.

"Ocean Life"

"Soul Food"

My "Soul Food" pattern inspired by all kinds of root vegetables is pretty much mixed media: papercut, monotype printing and crayon textures are all in the mix, and finally I edited everything digitally. A fab pattern for for the kitchen or for table linens.

And here's some designs for children!

The first design up features a classic, the fairytale of "Little Red Riding Hood". I had lots of fun drawing the characters and all the lush nature elements. This pattern is aimed mainly at children's homedecor, but would work for kid's clothing as well.

"Knights and Dragons"

"Submarines Ahoy!"

Same goes for the two boy's patterns above, they work for kid's home decor as well as for kid's apparel. Both are quirky and handdrawn and had lots of fun doing them. I especially like my busy little submarine rescue boats, I hope kids will love them too!

That's my selection for today. To see more of my patterns, please hop over to my "Voting now" page!

Hurray for the foxes!

Hello, here's a happy surprise! My little "Woodland Foxes" won! Hurray!!!
They came up on the 6th place in the Minted Child's Play Fabric Challenge (within the top 20 winners). Thank you so much everybody who might have voted for them!
Now the foxes soon will be roaming around on throw pillows to draperies to lampshades and everything in between for nurseries and kid's rooms! Really looking forward to see them on there :-)

If you'd like to know more you can view the winner's gallery here and read a bit about the inspiration for my woodland designs here.

Stargazing :-) and some happy news!

Ok, this post was meant to be about my second playfabric collection but now I just have to share these good news first! Two times success in the Minted + Domino contest, wohoo!!! Thank you so much everybody who voted for me! Here's my winning watercolour painting "The Willow Twins" that came 23th place in the top 30 winners! Out of 4841 submissions, so pretty chuffed here :-)

And one of my fave figure studies "Seated in Blue" won an editor's pick! Both works will be licensed as wall art for the Minted collection and will be available for sale soon. You can find the gallery of all top 30 winners here: http://www.minted.com/winners

And now, without further ado, here's part 2 of my submissions to the "Child's Play Fabric Challenge" on Minted, my "Space Adventure Collection".

No special inspiration here, except maybe a little bit of stargazing ;-) It's just one of the classic storybook themes for little boys' designs that I have always loved. All handdrawn and vector again.

"Milky Way Stroll" - please vote for it here

"Spaceship Parade" - please vote for it here

"Little Space Critters" - please vote for it here

I especially enjoyed creating those little critters from outer space and the way the play with stars and planets :-)

If you'd like to see part 1 of my submissions, just scroll down, you'll find them in my last blogpost.
And again, if you like my designs, I would be gratefull for your vote! Thank you so much!!!

Kid's pattern once again :-)

"Woodland Home" collection

It's been quite a while that I worked on designs for children – so I loved to design these fabric patterns for the "Child's Play Fabric Challenge" on Minted (fabric for nursery decor). Today I'll share part one of my submissions, my "Woodland Home" collection. As you can see, it is inspired by my surroundings! It's always nice to know where things come from so I am posting my mood board for the collection as well. I thought of the beautiful forests around here and all the stories and fairytales about what is "deep in the forest" – aiming to translate this magical atmosphere into fun and whimsical patterns. All handdrawn, working with vector for a change.
Please vote for my designs if you like them! Thank you so much!

"Woodland Home" inspiration board

"Deep in the Woods" – please vote for it here

"Woodland Stripe" – please vote for it here

"Woodland Foxes" – please vote for it here

"Little Forest Folks" – please vote for it here

I will share part 2 of my submissions soon – the "Space Travel" collection – so please stay tuned!

A BIG thank you those who take the time to vote on my designs! It is truly appreciated! Voting will be open until Tuesday, October 6.

P.s.: As you see this is yet another blogpost about a competition … I am really getting into Minted and because they curate their collection of licensed designs through an ongoing series of competitions it looks like there will be more vote asking in the future. I have to find a way to make this not too annoying, not sure how to do that yet …???
On the other hand it gives me the opportunity to show more of my work – with commissions and designs for outright sale this often is not possible. So in the end there's something good in this voting system too :-)

MATS Bootcamp 1: Jewel Days journals … Jewel Days Tagebücher

It's that time again: Lilla Rogers' MATS Bootcamp has started – here's my first design!
The assignment for January was to do a journal design inspired by Edwardian brooches. I quickly fell in love with the cameo jewellery that was fashionable in that period.
Here's some of my sketches of romantic Cameo ladies.

As I wanted my design to have a loose, light and romantic quality I started experimenting with watercolour and gouache. And loved these dot paintings. They look a bit like flowers which goes nicely with the romantic feel but they were initially inspired by some brooches studded with lots and lots of little glittering gems.

And here's one of the Cameo ladies in gouache paint …

I then assembled it all together and added some handlettering – like seen in my previous post – and my journals were ready.

Please take a look at the Bootcamp Gallery on the Lilla Rogers' Site as well! Like last year I am very much impressed by variety of interpretations and styles of my classmates. There's lots and lots of beautiful jewellery inspired designs to see!

MATS Bootcamp 2: Sweet Cities

Hello, playing serious catch up now …
These are my designs from MATS Bootcamp 2, from March. We were briefed to design a collection for bolt fabric, with the theme of Jell-O and Jell-O molds. Oh my. I have to confess that I didn't like it at all! I guess it's really an american thing. Lots of my classmates said how the theme brought back sweet memories from their childhood. Well, Jell-O was never big in Germany! And frankly when gathering inspiration I just felt that these wobbly desserts in highly artificial colours look … umm … ugly. Feel free to have a look at my Pinterest board to see for yourself, maybe you like them?

My only positive association was of skyscrapers made of sweets, and following this, I thought of New York, a night out at a theatre show and visiting a glamourous café on Fifth Avenue afterwards.  Although I have no idea if there is such a café …?

Anyway, I came up with these designs and looking back at them now, I quite like them because of the loose painting style. Although I guess I went a bit over the top with the theme, too much storytelling for a classic kitchen fabric …

Night and Day Owls … Eulennacht und Eulentag

"Night and Day Owls", available through Kimdesigns.com …
"Eulentag und Eulennacht", erhältlich über Kimdesigns.com

Today one of my children's designs has been featured by my US agent Kimdesigns: my "Night and Day Owls" :-) Normally the Kimdesigns collection is only viewable for their customers, so I am happily grabing the chance to share it with you! I only signed up with Kimdesigns a short while ago, and my collection there is still pretty small … but I will update it regularly and hope to soon have a good offering of patterns and designs available for the american market.
Happy that I now could share a bit of news with you! Sorry that it is so quiet here lately – I am very busy working for Indigo Paris! The deadline is on the 11th of February. Oh my oh my … wishing that there would be more time … but isn't it always that way? The Believe Creative Studio Collection coming together now will look fabulous :-) I will soon publish the details on how and where to see it at Indigo!

MATS Week 5: A hyper-lush Final … Ein hyper-opulentes Finale

In the final week of MATS part A we were working for the gift market. A large and very interesting market! Our assignment was to do a zipper bag (plus 2-3 coordinating pieces optionally) with a hyper-lush design. Hyper-lush is a trend that Lilla sees migrating from fashion down into the gift market. It basically means to throw lots of things together, and to go wild with form, colour and medium. To create a piece that gives the eye lots and lots (too much?) to see, a piece with visual opulence.
Here's the story: Our mini was to gather things we collect, and take pictures or draw these as motifs for our design. I am not a collector, often I like different things that don't really match, but it was fun to sift through my stuff, looking for inspiration. I settled on an underwater scene. I love the ocean and have gathered lots of shells and starfish over the years, as well as some little ornaments like fish and a glass seahorse. I am as well fascinated by all things pearly and glittery, like glass prisms, glitter balls, little pearls and so on. As I had a mad schedule in that week, I had to speed up the process and didn't draw anything. All the icons in this design are photographs or things scanned in or vintage illustrations, combined and manupulated in Photoshop.

I'll have to admit that I wasn't so happy with this theme at first. But I quickly realized that it is very fun to exaggerate. And the outcome? Well, I am still not sure if I like my design. I feel it is either cool or downright horrible … depending on my mood … Anyway, this assignment gave me lots of ideas to try out later on: integrating photography is something I want to explore further, as well as mixing different mediums and designing with vintage ephemera.
I was sad and relieved at the same time that part A was over now. Like Lilla says herself, it is a bootcamp. It takes over your life. I absolutely loved every minute of it – and now I need some time to digest it all! But I am happy that it's not really over yet… there's part B in Spring 2014 to look forward to :-)
If you want to read all my blogposts about the 5 MATS weeks, you can go here for week 1, week 2, week 3, and week 4. And the MATS tribe did a blogtour about the course – find the participants plus links here and my blogtour post here. Hope you'll enjoy reading about it!

MATS - Week 2: Bromeliads are beautiful … 2.Woche: Bromelien sind schön

Dear readers, if you are joining me from the MATS blog tour … you can find my blogtour post here!

This post here is all about the second week of MATS – with focus on Home Decor. I was really looking forward to it. Until I knew what we were supposed to do as mini exercise. Bromeliads :-( Well, I love plants and nature but in Surface Design there are flowers everywhere and you can get a bit fed up with florals. And I remembered Bromeliads as the kind of flowers my mother would grow on her living room flower window … Little did I know! After a research on Bromeliads via Pinterest I realized that there's sooo many varieties out in the wild and lots of them look just amazing. They are weird, spiky, colourful, expressiv and very beautiful. You can have a look for yourself at my Pinterest board here.

Sketching Bromeliads … Bromelien zeichnen

More Bromeliads: reed pen, watercolour and gouache paint …
Noch mehr Bromelien: Rohrfeder, Aquarell und  Gouache

Newly inspired I started to explore the Bromeliads through sketching. I tried out a lot of materials, including my good old reed pen and brush and paint. I liked what I did, but was still looking for a way to do justice to these plants: to their weirdness and rustic feel and their amazing forms. Following a sudden idea, I did a simple papercut and yes, I loved that! The expressiv forms called for some interesting textures and at first, I planned to add textures digitally. But then a second idea made me try out monoprints with the papercuts. Loved that even better! The prints really had the feeling I was looking for and fitted well with the character of the plants. I went into a real printing frenzy (I love handprinting), just couldn't stop! Below are just two examples, there's many …

My first papercut … mein erster Scherenschnitt

Monotype print … Monotypie

Monotype print … Monotypie

On wednesday, the big assignment was released: design a collection of 2-4 plates featuring bromeliads for a customer like Anthropologie. A dream assignment! I felt I had my icons ready to go, started scanning them in and worked on some compositions in Illustrator. Below is a work in progress screenshot, with my first colour scheme still.

First compositions in Illustrator … Erste Kompositionen in Illustrator

Stamping the words  … Stempeln des Textes

Working on the designs, a theme evolved in my head: growing plants (or dreams, or talent, or art …). I love it when pictures and words work well together, so the next step was natural to me: to find the words for this – seed, passion, treasure, bloom – and to integrate them into the designs. The biggest challenge was to find the right kind of type, and in the end I settled on sticking with the handmade feel. I used my kids' printing set (gathered at a flee market) for it, a good choice. I then added some more little drawings and details, and a digital texture for the background and my "Essential Garden" collection was ready.
I was really happy with my plates and got an extra boost when Lilla liked them and featured them in her review! Yay! My favourite week of all!

Yippieh! Definitiv meine Lieblingswoche!

MATS Blogtour: School is good for you :-) … Schule tut gut!

Today it is my turn to blog about our five weeks in the Lilla Rogers Studio School. A goup of classmates from "Make Art That Sells, Part 1" got together to do this blogtour, as a way to celebrate what we've just experienced. I think for my regular readers it has already transpired that I LOVED it :-) but I'll have to rave on some more now! And I am very much looking forward to part 2 in spring 2014.

First I want to show you my work from MATS, Part A:
Hier sind erstmal meine Arbeiten aus MATS, Teil A:

Above left: bolt fabric design. Above right: a children's book cover.
Middle row: home decor, plate designs.
Below left: Wall Art. Below right: a "hyper lush" design for the gift market.
Oben links: Stoffdesign für Meterware. Oben rechts: ein Kinderbuch-Titel.
In der Mitte: Zuhause & Wohnen, Wandteller-Designs.
Unten links: Wanddekoration. Unten rechts: ein "hyper-opulentes" Design für den Geschenke-Markt.

If you want to read and see more about the different assignments, go here for week 1(bolt fabric) … or check back later on, I will be writing about week 2 - 5 in the next time.

And now I want you to meet the fantastic and talented MATS-Crew! Today I am blogging together with Claire Lordon - http://www.clairelordon.blogspot.com. I am in love with her hyper-lush "Tiki Time" design for the gift market. "Made with a smile" as she puts it, which is very much what the course was about! Tomorrow it's the turn of Anna Whitford - http://rosanna-rossi.co.uk/ and Mary Tanana - http://groovitydesigns.com/
And to meet the rest of the crew go here - you'll find links to their blogs and a schedule of this blog tour. Enjoy!

Ok, now what to say about this course that hasn't been said before? … the blogosphere is full of well diserved praise right now.
I thought about it for quite a while … the main reason why doing MATS has been so very good for me lies in the course's broad perspective. I loved exploring all the different markets: bolt fabric, home decor, children's books, wall art and the gift market. And there's more to come in part B! Some of these markets are completely new for me, some familiar, some revisited.
Along the way, parts of a puzzle came together: the fusion of design and illustration. My love of handprinting could shine through. There was calligraphy/ typography involved, photography and painting as well. Even my good old graphic design layout skills are a good thing to have. All these things fuse together to make something new and exciting. There are no boundaries, no categories, just (hopefully) good art!
Plus we were learning from an artist AND agent with such a broad experience as Lilla Rogers.
These 5 weeks have made me really believe – and this for the very first time to be honest! – that the road I am on is the right one. I have enjoyed my journey in the last 3 years, moving step by step from graphic design to surface pattern design and illustration. BUT … there was always this nagging voice in the back of my head. "What if I am moving in the wrong direction? … What if I put in all this energy and love and it won't sell in the end … what if I am wasting my time … what if I am not good enough …" Sounds familiar? As independent designers we are facing a lot of challenges, and insecurity is one of the biggest. But yes, it is possible to make a good living this way! There are so many markets! There are so many possibilities! It's been a big shift in my mind. I feel much more confident. And that's a massive treat :-)

As well there are ALL THE OTHER TREATS that the course came with:
- a wonderful, positive and dedicated teacher – thanks Lilla!
- a great (ongoing) community of creative people from around the world
- fantastic assignments
- an amazing energy boost
- a steep learning curve
- a lot of fun (and - oh well - some little frustrations along the way…)
- some wise Lilla sayings to keep you on track, e.g.: "Your talent is not finite!" … "People buy your joy!" … "You have to put in the hours" and my fave "Get cracking!"
- sooo much inspiration and sooo many new ideas …
to name just a few of these treats :-)
I really couldn't recommend this course more!
