Family Fifties …… Familien Fünfziger

In Module 2 of our Surface Design Course we started working on trends like the 50ties. When looking for inspiration I immediatly thought of my parents old holiday photo albums from the 50ties. I loved going through them as a child, listening to my father's travel stories and my mother's rhapsodies. For me as a small child it sounded like the world's biggest adventure – and I guess for them it was just that: a sunny, colourful adventure. They were travelling to a foreign world for the first time in their lifes. With their small white Fiat car they took several trips to Italy, taking it all in: the warmth, sunshine, bathing, living outdoors, "exotic" flowers and birds, foreign language and meals, extrovert and vivacious people …
Even today – they are both 85 now – I can see how much they loved it all: their eyes start to twinkle when they talk about it!
I had a lot of fun working on 50ties inspired drawings, designs and patterns, and my collection is an ongoing process. Today I'd like to share some of my inspiration with you.
I plan to do a second post showing some 50ties and 60ties yardage from my mother's collection – a real treasure trove – so stay tuned!

The well-travelled FIAT. Small car with lots of unexpected storage space!
Der weitgereiste FIAT. Kleines Auto, erstaunlicher Stauraum!

Crossing the Alps. Look at that amazing skirt! It was yellow and black, a real eye-catcher, and my mother sewed it herself.
Auf dem Weg durch die Alpen. Man beachte den Rock! Selbstgenäht, gelb-schwarz und der totale Blickfang!
On the road above Lago di Garda. No other cars to see …
Auf der Straße über dem Gardasee. Und kein anderes Auto in Sicht …
Because they travelled on a small budget, they often opted for camping.
But sometimes the treated themselves to a small hotel.
An old watercolour postcard – Lago di Garda.
Eine alte Aquarell-Postkarte vom Gardasee.
Malcesine, Lago di Garda. These old postcards were really cherished –this one decorated my mother's sewing room.
So colourful ;-) Was für Farben!
Bathing Belle in a typical 50ties bathing suit, red with white dots.
Badenixe im typischen 50ziger Badeanzug, rot-weiß gepunktet.
My father was fascinated by italian ladies wearing big hear (he used to call them "baboons" or "nests") …
… and my mother tried to retort with big hats!
… und meine Mutter konterte mit großen Hüten!
They took it all in: their very first meal of Spaghetti …
… the flowers …
… die Blumen …
… "exotic" birds …
… "exotische" Vögel …

… and the sunshine, of course!
… und natürlich die Sonne!

  1. So gorgeous, Eva, I traveled with them and with you through the imagination. They seem to be happy up to now. There is no other place to romance like Italy, I think. Wish I lived in Europe... Show more, show the patterns. Your writing is delicious too.

    1. Thanks, Bethania! Funny, I imagine South America being far more interesting than Europe ;-)
Will show the patterns as soon as I have it all together. So much to do at the moment … and so little time …
