Heimtextil 4: Beware, here's the excentric… Achtung, hier ist der Exzentriker!

… continued from here and here …
… Fortsetzung von hier und hier …

Now what would you think of a room like that? Kitschy? Old fashioned? Think again! It's trendy. It's an arrangement that excentrics would love!
Kitschig? Altmodisch? Da müssen Sie umdenken! Das ist trendy. So ein Arrangement würden Exzentriker lieben.

The excentric is the fourth of the Heimtextil trend personalities. These people are described as hunters and gatherers. They are rather collecting trophies than buying products. For them, it's not a question of right or wrong. Anything goes. There's delight in bad taste! Eclecticism is the word. Excentrics are free-spirited, distinct and authentic to the extreme. They love decorative arts and crafts mixed with the traditional mixed with folklore mixed again with exotic and tribal influences. With mixing right everything they achieve a certain timelessness. "Their" products are unique, of true origin and always as extraordinary as possible.

Now welcome to the curiosity cabinet! We LOVED it. So did the other visitors of the trend exhibtion. This seemed to be the most frequented and most photographed area. And sure it was spectacular in it's gimcrackery! You could easily feel that the makers of the trend exhibition seriously enjoyed creating these rooms. No wonder – what could be more fun for designers than the possibility to go wild?! Creativity unleashed! Lots of little corners with fun "installations", old fashioned and kitschy wall art, porcellain in it's wildest form, gobelin, shimmering textiles, and extravagant wallpapers. A head made out of books. Peacock feathers, flowers, stuffed animals. And patterns, patterns patterns, everywhere. No clue where to look first! And if you finally put your head down in exhaustion, you found a bounty of patterns again in flamboyant and wild rugs on the floor. They even had a live pianist entertaining the visitors in the middle of all this eclectic mixture.
So all really fun to watch. On the other hand I'd probably start to screem if I had to stay in an appartement like that longer than one day! Maybe we as designers should just see this trend as a possibility to create to the fullest and leave our comfort zone!? Oh well, maybe I should create an exentric corner like the ones above in our house – just for fun!

Pfauenfedern, Blumen, ausgestopfte Tiere. Und Muster, Muster, Muster überall. Man wußte garnicht, wo man zuerst hinschauen sollte.
Also viel "Stoff" zum Anschauen.

And my design mag? Sure there was an excentric appartement as well. I found it on the web. But beware – you're in for a serious dose of bad (uhm … excentric) taste: http://theselby.com/galleries/cindy-gallop/

For recreation I recommend watching the heimtextil trend video here: http://youtu.be/Lg9TyAb_7pw

Watch out for Heimtextil part 5 – the final part – when I will take you to "Design Live", the hall with all the design studios.

    1. Thanks, Phyllida! Yes, the trend show was fab and a bit mad. But the work shown by the designstudios was more pared down than this trend section …
