Social media and … Social Media und …

Silent sea © Eva twinkles

As some of you may have already noticed I am on a diet. A facebook/ internet/ social media diet. It's been an interesting experiment – although busy with work and now ill with flu I have felt more relaxed and productive than before.
It's a tricky thing with me and inspiration. Sure, I do love to have some inspiration for my work. But the emphasis lies on "some". Not tons of it! If I am exposed to too much of this good thing, I seem to be so busy with savouring it that it feels difficult to get into creating. Although the internet and social media have drastically broadened my horizon it sometimes feels like a constant chatter in the background, like an ennoying tv humming away all day in the background of an appartement …
I have always loved silence. It inspires me!

I have been a freelancer/self employed person for more than 15 years now. I love collaborations and meeting up with clients, but I am perfectly fine with working on my own as well. The days when I feel lonely are very rare. My inspiration kind of builds up naturally during the day, it feeds on all the little things of everyday life, a talk with my partner, something I see on the street, some newspaper story, music on the radio … and most of the time, this is enough to get me going on my creative tasks.
There has been a lot of talk in the media lately about introverts and extroverts. I am very clearly an introvert. I have never seen this as a problem, I've been totally ok with it. I felt that it is just good to have a well of own ideas within you, to have an inner strength and to just know that it is all there. Even if nobody else might see it. It makes you independent. And I have always valued independence.
But in the last days I've come to understand that today's social media society might not really fit so well with an introvert's personality. I think it has a lot to do with the way we process information. An introvert just doesn't need so much stimulation from the outside world and on the flipside might easily get overloaded (and blocked) by all things going on.

Sure I want to be on facebook, I want to keep in contact with all the great people I have met through the internet. I might try to build up a kind of ritual for me like logging in only once a day … or take a social media diet from time to time …? Let's just see. I will certainly keep on blogging …
How do you feel about all this social media stuff? Do you feel overloaded sometimes? Does social media help you with creative work or does it block you? What are your strategies to keep up with it all? Would really love to know!

And now, after having said all this, I go on facebook to post about this piece. Well, that perfectly illustrates the ambivalence of it all …

Mal sehen.
