"Artists around the world" bloghop

Now it's my turn now in this bloghop, linking artists around the world :-) We have been asked 4 questions about our work and work process and post our answers on our blogs, then linking up to the next artists.

Let me quickly introduce myself first, I am Eva Marion Seyffarth, a surface designer and illustrator from Germany working under the studio name "Eva twinkles".

I have been invited to this hop by my friend and collague Vivayne, a freelance artist from Las Vegas. Please check out her lovely work here and blog here!
Here's a set of plates she did, which I love for it's softness and dreamy atmosphere:

"A joyous time", copyright Vivayne.

And here are my answers to the 4 bloghop questions:

1. Why do I do what I do?
Well I felt drawn to be an illustrator and designer as long as I can think. The creative process is something that comes very naturally to me, creating is just what I do, as simple as that. But if you dig deaper I guess it's mostly the freedom that comes with it: you get to create your own world, and I LOVE that.

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?
Ok, the good old style question … I think what sets me apart is textures and translucency. It's as well my foundation in traditional art, married together with all the digital possibilities we have nowadays. I am a very haptic person and love to make a mess with paint or handprinting techniques. I have a background in handprinting, and have been painting with watercolours since childhood. My father is a landscape watercolour painter and often took me out on painting trips into the forest or the fields, and  I guess that really has shaped me.
On subject matter, I am mostly inspired by nature – often by organic structures in plants and landscape but as well by flora and fauna and landscape in general. Next biggest inspiration is words, storytelling and folk tales.

done with monoprints + Illustrator

and used for the "Essential Garden" collection

3. How does my creative process work?
Like said above, I always start by hand, with pen on paper or scissors or paint or printing ink. I nowadays work with gouache rather than with watercolour as the colours are more saturated and I love that you can go from translucent to pastose colours with it. When it comes to printing, I often work with papercuts and print them as monoprints. I am a classic case when it comes to sketchbooks too. I take mine everywhere with me, and scribble down ideas or inspirational stuff. Very often it's a sketch from my sketchbook that is the starting point for my work. I usually just start working on single motifs and bits that come to my mind for my theme till I get to saturation point. I then scan everything in and do my composition and additional elements in Photoshop and/or Illustrator.

4. What am I working on now?
I have just finished my piece for the first round of Lilla Roger's Global Talent Search. Unfortunately I can't show the piece yet … but you can see some work in progress pics in my previous blogpost.
I am as well working on editorial illustrations, to build up my portfolio. Doing Lilla Rogers' MATS courses has rekindled my love of this field and I would like to get more commissions in that market.
Last but not least I am working on a makeover of my website. So much has happened since I first published it about a year ago! My work has changed and evolved to be more "me" and I will be tearing down almost all the pieces I had on the site, replacing them with new work. It's totally scary, but feels good too. It's about time!

And now let's travel on up to the north of Europe … please check in on the following monday, the first of September, to see what my collagues from Scandinavia have to say on their blogs!

Sanna Väätänen is a painter, photographer and illustrator from Finland. I love this inventive cuckoo clock design that she has done for a phone cover, it is a witty and very unique interpretation of the theme:

See more of her illustrations here and please check in at Sanna's blog for her "Artists around the world" post on the first of September!

Simi Gauba is a pattern and product designer originally from India, but now based in Sweden. Here's a print that is available in her Society 6 store – I have to tell you it was a difficult choice, there's so much beautiful designs in that shop! But I especially love this print for it's boldness and inventive typography:

Please make sure to take a look at the Simidesign blog for more beautiful things to see and for Simi's  "Artist's around the world" post on the first of September!

Thank you for visiting!

P.s.: You'd like to read more blogposts of this hop and to meet more creative souls form all over the world? Tasha Goddard is collecting them here on her blog, please take a look! Thanks Tasha for creating this linky, it's a fab idea, and I will sure be browsing the links as well!

Just a quick note, or two … eine kleine Notiz, oder 2 :–)

Dear readers, if you're looking for a blogpost in the "Artists around the world" bloghop … sorry, the schedule has changed. I will be here with my post for this hop next monday, 25th of August. So please check in again. Thanks!
This week it's my friend and collague Vivayne's turn, have a look here for her lovely blogpost!

Global Talent Search 2014 – work in progress …

On another note, I am taking part in this years Global Talent Search by Lilla Rogers Studio. So far I didn't dare to post this as I was not sure if I would make the deadine, but I did :–) No chance to win this though, with so many fabulous artists from all around the world taking part in the competition. But it feels a bit like the designer's/ illustrator's Olympic games, and I sure want to be part of this!
Althoug time pressured, I loved to work on the first assignment, it was fun to experiment with handprinted stuff again. More about this later on … as soon as the happy participants of the next round are announced. Speek to you soon!

Global Talent Search – choosing colours … Farbwahl

Bloghop: Let's fly!

Welcome to all bloghoppers, joining me from the inspirational blog of Piia Podersalu, a talented designer and illustrator from Israel.

You are now entering Germany! A few words about me: I am a well experienced graphic designer and illustrator who recently fell in love with surface pattern design and went "back to school" to study everything around it. I love to tell stories in patterns and aim to combine the handdrawn/handpainted with the digital world. After earning my first (tiny) stripes as a Surface Pattern Designer in 2012 I am currently working on my new website.
Please feel free to look around my blog! I would be happy to see you visiting again!

And now let's fly:
These are feather drawings from my sketchbook …

Feathers as gifts from the sky, signifying honor. Connecting us to the birds and the gods of the sky.
General inspiration: nature, ethnic, tribal, midcentury.
Emerald palette: Earthy, yet fresh, with a touch of mystical.

With this bloghop, we are kicking of the design year 2013.
Goals for 2013:
To grow as a designer and illustrator.
To find balance in work, love, friendship and time to just be.
My word of the year 2013: balance.

Dear bloghoppers, thanks a lot for reading. Please feel free to comment, I'd love to hear from you!
Please hop on now to South Africa, to Kirsten Miller's blog for more fantastic designs! If you just found us now, you can start your hop in France, on the pattern addict blog of designer Gill Eggleston. From there you will be linked from blog to blog to fly around the world in design. Enjoy!

A big thank you goes to Rosie Martinez-Dekker from Believe Creative Studio for curating this fab bloghop!

Grundlegende Inspiration: Natur, ethno, tribal, 50ger jahre.

Passion for pattern bloghop … and some thoughts on style … und ein paar Stil-Gedanken

Welcome to all bloghoppers, joining me from the inspirational blog of Zoe Attwell. This bloghop catches me at an important moment, in the wake of the first show that I will participate in as surface designer! Like some other bloggers of this hop I am a guest designer for Believe Creative Studio at the upcoming Indigo fair from 19-21 September in Paris. Well experienced dutch Believe Creative Studio is specialized on baby, children and junior designs.

September in Paris teil. Das niederländische Believe Creative Studio ist auf Designs für Babys, Kinder und Teenager spezialisiert.

Now that my designs are sent off, there has been a little time for reflection about style and my journey into surface design. It has been a rather unexpected but inspirational one! When I started studying surface design I was dreaming of beautiful flowery patterns and working from nature, about elegant ornaments, about geometrics, about patterns inspired by oriental tiles or tribal woven designs. Well … that hasn't happened!

Friendly lions …

… and the italian ladies Rosalba, Chiara and Susa from the fifties.
… und die italienischen 50ger Jahre Fräuleins Rosalba, Chiara und Susa.

What happened was my love of illustration getting in the way! You see, illustration has been my first love, and the reason why I studied "visual communication" all those years ago.
At first, when I found quirky drawings and little characters peeking up in my patterns, I was a bit irritated – this was not going the way that I had planned! Then, with the encouragement to find our own style, I decided to go along with it.

Was passiert ist?

Skechbook continued: a watercolour crocodile …
Mehr aus dem Skizzenbuch: ein Aquarell-Krokodil …

… and two moody birds hiding in a paisley.

Now this finally led me to what I have done in the last months … working for children's fashion is not what I had planned, but I certainly enjoy it very much!

In the last weeks we have all been very busy preparing for Indigo Paris, exhibiting as Guest Designers under the wings of said Believe Creative Studio, owned by Rosie Martinez Dekker and Vincent Dekker. It's been an awesome experience! Lots of work … late late nights … But lots of fun as well, and tons of inspiration and great guidance from the studio's owner Rosie. A wonderful team spirit as we were helping each other along and enjoying the ride. A big thank you to everyone on the team and especially to Rosie and Vincent!
Thinking of you as you are busy preparing the show … wishing you lots of energy to get it all done!

Me, I am slowly rediscovering the outside world again ;-) Will try to find a little time for reflection and rest before I go off to Paris next Tuesday. Somehow I still cannot believe that I will see and experience it all! I am really looking forward to meet Rosie, Vincent and some of my fellow guest designers. This is the first time that I worked so close together and shared so much with people that I met "only" online. We have been like a big, hard working, international and inspirational design family. Now I will meet my design family in person, finally – exhiting!

Das Believe Creative Studio, Rosie Martinez-Dekker und ihr Team freuen sich, Sie auf der Indigo Paris, Fashion Edition, vom 19. – 21.

Passion for Pattern Bloghop – Welcome! … Willkommen!

Welcome to all bloghoppers, joining me from the inspirational blog of Miranda Mol. I'd now like to show you a mix and match of patterns that I created during our fantastic E-course "The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design". Hope you like it! (Klick on image to enlarge.) For more patterns and collections please go to the "Surface Design" page of this blog.

Mix and match patterns from the
"The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design"
Mustermix aus "The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design"
Our E-course was a fabulous experience. The chance to study online was heaven sent for me, as there's no possibility to study Surface Design in Germany. I've learned lots and lots (an ongoing process …), really enjoyed to be part of an international, inspirational and supportive group of students and definitely found a new direction for my creative work. A big "thank you" goes to the two inspiring women who created this course: Beth Nicholls and Rachael Taylor!
The end of the course is hopefully a beginning: I am working on children's designs right now. This has been on the top of my wish list for quite a while! My little "Sunflower Fool" is already available on fabric at Spoonflower. I might have the chance to exhibit my children's patterns at Indigo Paris in September under the wings of a studio.
More plans? Yes, a lot: I hope to get my portfolio ready and online at the end of this year. I want to make more fabric designs available for purchase on Spoonflower. And I definitely want to start my own small collection. I hope to get it ready for Christmas shopping … will have to decide if it's going to be handmade or digitally printed … right now I am experimenting with handprinting.
Oh, and yes, I would really welcome any freelance work and yes, I am looking for an agent! So much to do …
Dear bloghoppers, thanks a lot for reading. Please feel free to comment – and I hope you'll visit again! Please hop on now to Jolene Heckman's blog for more fantastic patterns. If you just found us now, please start your hop on Claire Smillie's blog. From there you will be linked from blog to blog to see and read it all! Enjoy!

"Sunflower Fool"
Willkommen an alle Bloghopper! The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design" entworfen habe.
