Reverting back to winter … and loving it!

Firstly I'd like to share a new (wintery) win:

Pretty chuffed that my little winter birdie made it into the top 30 winners of the Minted & Pottery Barn contest for kid's wallart! ! (Only just … on the 27th… but in nevertheless!) It will soon be available as art print – and hopefully will sell well in the next holiday season!
And I only learned later on that this was the biggest contest Minted ever did with over 600,000 votes!!! and more than 7300 submission :-o Good that I didn't know before entering … prob wouldn't have dared. So double happy over here now! You can see the gallery of all top 30 winners here.

And secondly here's more Christmas cards coming up! I have entered these designs into the current stationary challenge for holiday cards on Minted, so votes are very welcome, as always :-) Thank you so much!
(Just click on the title of the image, that'll lead you to my submission on the Minted site).

"Starlight Angel" (foil pressed)

"Watercolour Prayers" (non foil)

"The Journey" (foil pressed)

I hope you like them! Motifs and lettering were all done in brush and ink, which develops into one of my fave techniques at the moment.
Please feel free to have a look at all of my submissions here. Thank you!
And you can have a look at the foil pressed version of the Holiday card challenge here and at the non foil version here).

Revisiting an old love

This week I've done my first two stationary designs since 16 years! It was a lot of fun! Have to do this more often.

Guess what I did it for? Yes … they are for a new Minted challenge: the "Sweet Celebrations Quickfire Kids' Birthday Party Invitation Challenge". This blog is becoming a kind of Minted blog lately ;-) I am still pretty happy that I started working with them and I love how the challenges make my creative muscles stretch!

The brief is for all kind of kid's party invitations really. But it mentions some special interests:
photo card designs (as well as having personalizable text areas they are as well customizable with people's own photos) and designs for autumn birthdays. I love all things spooky! So here are my invitation designs:

"Spooktacular Wreath"

"Spooky Gallery"

I hope you'll like them! And like always, votes are very welcome! (Please just click on the title of the images, that'll lead you to my submissions on the Minted site.)
I am curious really if I can manage to get into the Minted Stationary Collection as well …???
Voting is open from now until Tuesday, March 29. Thank you so much :-)

P.s.: And now you wonder why stationary is an "old love" of mine? I used to do a lot of stationary designs when I was living in London around the year 2000. I was freelancing for Camden Graphics (which is now a part of UK Greetings). It was a fab time and I loved to work in their Islington studio. Oh sweet memories :-)

Contest No.3: The Minted & Pottery Barn Kids + Teen Wall Art Challenge!

Wall art contests seem to come in threes as all good things do! The Minted & Pottery Barn Kids + Teen Wall Art Challenge is the third one on Minted since 2016 has started. Not sure if it is a good thing though … we are still waiting on the results of the previous two contest …
In this contest Minted + Pottery Barn are looking for art prints for boys and girls and for the whole age range starting with baby up to teenagers.
I am a bit exhausted contestwise but I just couldn't miss this one! Wall art for kids really is one of my fave subjects. It would be nice to build up a kid's collection on Minted. And to have a print been sold by Pottery Barn would be totally awesome! Well a girl can dream ;-)

So ok, I went ahead and submitted 16 pieces. Like always I will be showing you my faves here and I would be delighted to get your votes! Please just click on the title of the images, that'll lead you directly to my submissions on the Minted website. Thank you so much!

"Roaming Free"

I really love the playfulness and freedom vibe of this painting! It's a beautiful print for horse lovers of all ages. And it fits well to the brief as two of the themes asked for are animal prints and hobby themed prints.

"How to catch a Winter Star"

Two little winter bunnies in sweaters make a soft and tender nursery print for the holiday season – which is another theme asked for in the brief.

And here now are two fun prints for boys:

"Counting Crocodiles"

"Submarines Ahoi"

"The Craftsman" is originally an illustration done for a German fairytale. Works for both genders I think. I love the European and old times vibe of this one.

"The Craftsman"

Finally two romantic prints for girls and young ladies:

"Framed in Petals"

The inspiration for the watercolour print above came from Art Nouveau cameo brooches.

"Wake up in Flowers"

And this mixed media painting was inspired by our rooftop garden, that literally grows into our  bedroom windows in the summer …

I hope you like my submissions!
Want to see more? I have posted all my submissions on the "Voting now" page, so please just hop over there to take a look! Thank you again!

Hurray for the foxes!

Hello, here's a happy surprise! My little "Woodland Foxes" won! Hurray!!!
They came up on the 6th place in the Minted Child's Play Fabric Challenge (within the top 20 winners). Thank you so much everybody who might have voted for them!
Now the foxes soon will be roaming around on throw pillows to draperies to lampshades and everything in between for nurseries and kid's rooms! Really looking forward to see them on there :-)

If you'd like to know more you can view the winner's gallery here and read a bit about the inspiration for my woodland designs here.

Happy advent!

Now I wanted to do a painted advent this year. Like REALLY wanted to! But no way … like always in December I am far too busy with commissioned work. It's mainly graphic design projects at this time of the year.

I take my hat off to everyone who does an advent while working full time and full speed!!!
For me I think I will only manage to do this if I start early in autumn and work on it in advance …
Anyway, I wanted to share the bits I did for the 1st and 2nd of December. Happy advent everybody!

On another note the Cyber Monday sale at Minted is on still! 25 % off! It's extended until today (Thursday December 3rd) noon San Francisco time – which is 9pm mid European time. So only a few hours left … if you're interested my wall art hop over here NOW! And thank you so much everybody who already ordered :-)

Stargazing :-) and some happy news!

Ok, this post was meant to be about my second playfabric collection but now I just have to share these good news first! Two times success in the Minted + Domino contest, wohoo!!! Thank you so much everybody who voted for me! Here's my winning watercolour painting "The Willow Twins" that came 23th place in the top 30 winners! Out of 4841 submissions, so pretty chuffed here :-)

And one of my fave figure studies "Seated in Blue" won an editor's pick! Both works will be licensed as wall art for the Minted collection and will be available for sale soon. You can find the gallery of all top 30 winners here: http://www.minted.com/winners

And now, without further ado, here's part 2 of my submissions to the "Child's Play Fabric Challenge" on Minted, my "Space Adventure Collection".

No special inspiration here, except maybe a little bit of stargazing ;-) It's just one of the classic storybook themes for little boys' designs that I have always loved. All handdrawn and vector again.

"Milky Way Stroll" - please vote for it here

"Spaceship Parade" - please vote for it here

"Little Space Critters" - please vote for it here

I especially enjoyed creating those little critters from outer space and the way the play with stars and planets :-)

If you'd like to see part 1 of my submissions, just scroll down, you'll find them in my last blogpost.
And again, if you like my designs, I would be gratefull for your vote! Thank you so much!!!

Kid's pattern once again :-)

"Woodland Home" collection

It's been quite a while that I worked on designs for children – so I loved to design these fabric patterns for the "Child's Play Fabric Challenge" on Minted (fabric for nursery decor). Today I'll share part one of my submissions, my "Woodland Home" collection. As you can see, it is inspired by my surroundings! It's always nice to know where things come from so I am posting my mood board for the collection as well. I thought of the beautiful forests around here and all the stories and fairytales about what is "deep in the forest" – aiming to translate this magical atmosphere into fun and whimsical patterns. All handdrawn, working with vector for a change.
Please vote for my designs if you like them! Thank you so much!

"Woodland Home" inspiration board

"Deep in the Woods" – please vote for it here

"Woodland Stripe" – please vote for it here

"Woodland Foxes" – please vote for it here

"Little Forest Folks" – please vote for it here

I will share part 2 of my submissions soon – the "Space Travel" collection – so please stay tuned!

A BIG thank you those who take the time to vote on my designs! It is truly appreciated! Voting will be open until Tuesday, October 6.

P.s.: As you see this is yet another blogpost about a competition … I am really getting into Minted and because they curate their collection of licensed designs through an ongoing series of competitions it looks like there will be more vote asking in the future. I have to find a way to make this not too annoying, not sure how to do that yet …???
On the other hand it gives me the opportunity to show more of my work – with commissions and designs for outright sale this often is not possible. So in the end there's something good in this voting system too :-)

Hi! Believe it or not I am back already – now really everything happens at the same time!

Here are my entries for the "A is for Art" competition on Minted. The brief was for personalizable art prints for children. I had lots of fun doing these, based on motifs from some older pattern designs of mine, and I think they worked out well. Hope that you have fun looking at them as well! Please vote for them if you like them! Voting is open until Monday, August 31.

First up there are three prints to give as gifts to the parents of a newborn child:

Please vote for my "Butterfly Wishes" here!

Here's the link to vote for my "Bunny Welcome"…

and this is the link to vote for the "Heart Tree".

And here's three more prints for a boy's room – although I think the pirates would work for a girl as well. As a girl I would have loved to be a pirate princess!

This link leads to the voting for my "Animal Pirates"!

Please go here to vote for the big "Space Adventure" …

… and if you like this fearless knight go here for voting!

THANKS SO MUCH!!!

And please don't forget to vote as well for my submission to the Fabric 8 contest "Botanical sketchbook"! My pattern got me into the semifinals :-) and I would LOVE to go on further!
You can vote here http://www.spoonflower.com/contests/317 until September 2, 2015.

THANK YOU AGAIN!

And I promise I'll come off of this vote asking soon. It is just all these good contests at the same time …
(One more to come … more about that one next week …)

Night and Day Owls … Eulennacht und Eulentag

"Night and Day Owls", available through Kimdesigns.com …
"Eulentag und Eulennacht", erhältlich über Kimdesigns.com

Today one of my children's designs has been featured by my US agent Kimdesigns: my "Night and Day Owls" :-) Normally the Kimdesigns collection is only viewable for their customers, so I am happily grabing the chance to share it with you! I only signed up with Kimdesigns a short while ago, and my collection there is still pretty small … but I will update it regularly and hope to soon have a good offering of patterns and designs available for the american market.
Happy that I now could share a bit of news with you! Sorry that it is so quiet here lately – I am very busy working for Indigo Paris! The deadline is on the 11th of February. Oh my oh my … wishing that there would be more time … but isn't it always that way? The Believe Creative Studio Collection coming together now will look fabulous :-) I will soon publish the details on how and where to see it at Indigo!

On my way to Paris … auf dem Weg nach Paris!

Image courtesy of Believe Creative Studio …

Just a quick announcement:
I am happy to be part of the Indigo Team of Dutch Believe Creative Studio again :-)
My designs will be going to Paris soon, to be presented in one of the most important Surface Design/ Textile Design shows in the world: Indigo Paris, Fashion Edition, in February 2014. Thank you Rosie and Vincent for collaborating with me again! It's going to be some very intensive weeks as we are working on the collection for kid's fashion.
If you want to read about my experiences from last time, have a look here. That's a blogpost I did after visiting Indigo in September 2012, which had been my very first Surface Design show … looking at it with wide open beginners eyes ;-) I will always remember it as a fab experience!

MATS - Week 3: A Voyage to Russia … 3.Woche: Ein Ausflug nach Rußland

I have been debating with myself for quite a wile if I should post my assignment from MATS week 3 … You see, I don't like it so much. It's ok, but not as good as it could be … but thanks to Lilla's advice during the week I now have a lot of ideas how to make it better.
But let me begin at the beginning: week 3 of MATS was all about the children's book market. We were to do a bookcover or a spread of 2 pages for "The Language of the Birds", a rather unknown folktale from Russia. Maybe my first mistake was to take this one for granted somehow. I had done bookillustrations. I knew how to do it. So I settled quickly on a scene, and decided to go about it in my usual manner: watercolour and gouache.

Work in progress, watercolour … Im Arbeitsprozeß, Aquarell

The watercolour painting looked promising at first, but then I started on the details with gouache, and realized that I would run out of time … after all, my usual technique is a very elaborate one. I managed to finish before the deadline, but didn't have enough time to do the lettering part properly. I as well had no time to develop a border with folk ornaments to integrate a "russian folk" feeling.
Because I was running out of time, I didn't look much at what the others were doing. In fact, I felt very much like being out of the world, maybe I was in Russia really? When I finally was ready, and had a look, I was a bit shocked. Sooo much beautiful work, so fresh and so fun! And most of my classmates went for either digital or for a combination of digital and handrawn/handpainted.
It's so stupid really: my book illustration days are a long gone, in fact, nearly 15 years. At that time, there was a clear distinction between design work done on computer basis, and illustration work done by hand. So automatically I fell back into my old routine, and the thought of using the computer never crossed my mind. But it would have been so much easier – it's so much quicker and much more flexible.
I plan to rework this one and will then go for a combination of digital and handpainted. Let's see what comes out of that  …

Yeah! It's is ready! … Yippieh! Endlich fertig!

My new website for Surface pattern Design and Illustration is ready! Finally! A pretty long process with some road blocks … but slow and steady wins the race, too :–) Very happy now! Hope you'll like it. Here I'll show some screenshots from the landing page.

Happy Easter! … Frohe Ostern!

Wishing you a happy holiday!
We are hoping on a bit of sunshine … would love to potter around in the garden … but the weatherman is talking of snow AGAIN :-(
It's going to be a pretty relaxed Easter around here. Maybe I'll work a bit on my new website, but only "light working" really!

P.s.: The two little Easter bunnies escaped from my "Candy Forest Collection" to say hello …

Happy Valentine's!

Happy Valentine's day!
Here, we'll spread a bit of design love! There are a lot of Valentine design showcases around to warm your hearts: Jacqueline Auvigne is sending you some
L-O-V-E with the fab showcase No.4 on her blog. Then there's a Valentine's spotlight on Faye Brown's blog, including my placement design "Les Oiseaux", as seen above. This design was aimed for childrens' fashion. It was done originally for Indigo Paris 2012 to be presented there by dutch Believe Creative Studio.

And Virginia Kamau of Njeridesigns showcases Valentine's colours this week on her blog. It's one colour a day, starting with purple/lavender on Monday. Love this concept! I believe that colour infusions are a good remedy against the February cold, so make sure to follow her along till "peach Friday"! Today you will find my "Sunny Valentine's" pattern, as seen above, on Virginia's post about the colour yellow.

Have a nice Valentine's day!
