Letting go of 2015 … happy new Year!

There's a little program on Facebook that does a review of your last year. Here's what I got … I love the random selection of images that came up. I think they very well represent my year 2015.

New Year pirates (originally done for kid's fashion) and a notebook design from Bootcamp.
Easter hares and my first editor's pick in a Minted comp, the "Lady of the Orchard".

My "Rooftop Garden" pattern (Fabric 8 Contest semifinalist). Another win on Minted, the "Willow Twins".

One of my Inktober drawings. My bestselling print on Minted, the "Cloud Symphony" from Donegal.
A snapshot in November. And 2 sketchy advent angels.

2015 has been a good year.

I had a nice mix of commissions, graphic design as well as illustration/ surface design, which kept me quite busy throughout the year.

Did MATS Bootcamp and MATS B (again) in winter and spring. I complained a lot about not having enough time for the courses … but still … after MATS B I felt like walking through a door, or up to the next level. I guess I only realized a bit afterwards how much I'd learnt.

Had my first intern in spring, an interesting experience. I must get back into teaching soon!

Let go of a few aspirations that didn't feel right anymore. Maybe this was the reason why some other doors opened up quite unexpectedly?
Found out that taking part in competitions can be quite fun and isn't always a waste of time – if you win :-)

Did my first month-long drawing challenge with Inktober. Had a lot of fun with it and often surprised myself with the subjects/themes I came up with. But it took up way more time than I expected, and I often yearned to "do something more" with my sketches, which then would take up even more time.
So … no "Art Daily" for me in 2016. But I can well imagine to do 1 or 2 monthly drawing/painting challenges per year.

To round up the year, I sold a good number of art prints via Minted in the holiday season. Such a great feeling! Thank you all!

In general my work got more painterly, more free flowing, less cluttered. Which I love! I feel way more confident about my work and my direction than at the beginning of this year.
When it comes to favourite subjects I love painting/illustrating anything with animals. I am a confessing romantic. And my Minted success rekindled my love for landscape painting as well.
I too realized that I now can switch quite effortlessly from illustration to graphic design to surface design and back again. With tasks as varied as coming up with a communication/advertising concept for a local health centre to designing patterns for kid's fabric this is a great gift for me! It opens up so many possibilities :-)

Ok, 2015, and now … there you go …
I'll raise the anchor of my little pirate ship and go looking for new adventures in 2016! Happy New Year everybody!

Old and new and a contest … Altes und Neues und ein Wettbewerb

When recently sifting through my studio stuff I stumbled upon an old folder with watercolour works and monotype prints that I did quite some time ago. Turned out I still love lots of them, so I decided to submit them to the Minted "For Art's Sake" competition. Along with some newer pieces. I really enjoy seeing old and new together!

"Cloud Symphony Ring of Beara Ireland"

"Cloud Symphony Donegal Ireland"

Here are two watercolour landscapes, part of my Irish "Cloud Symphony" series. Although they're different to what I mostly do nowadays I don't feel they're outdated. I can well imagine taking my watercolours and brushes out for a hike in the valley to do some river landscapes … hoping to do that soon! For me landscapes are good when they manage to transport feelings and evoke the atmosphere of the place. Hoping that I managed to do this with these works!
Landscape painting will always be close to my heart as it's very much where I come from as an artist. My father is a watercolourist and I spent many happy childhood days painting together with him somewhere in the forest or the fields.

Rock Symphony No.2 Brittany France

This is a monotype printed from my own photography. Back in the old days I loved to experiment with all kinds of handprinting. I think it goes along well with the next piece, my little collection of seaweeds, done just some weeks ago.

"Garden of the Seven Seas"

I love the idea of painting collections and play with the thought to do more of these soon.

"Autumn Fire Fern"

The piece above is a real mix of old and new. It's based on an old monotype of fern leaves found here in the Lahn River Valley. I scanned the monotype in and manipulated it digitally.

"Cactus Night"

"Cactus Night" is one of my fave pieces from this year. It holds a little aha-moment as it's made of elements that I did for three different assignments from the MATS courses and last year's Global Talent Search. One of the great learnings from Lilla Rogers and the MATS courses is to work in icons and combine them digitally. Love the freedom that you can have with this approach! I too love this piece's combination of watercolour, papercut, monotype and drawing. It feels 100% me and I am looking forward to more works with this style.

"Soft Summer Bouquet"

And I think it's fun to see that the "Cactus Night" goes along well with my "Soft Summer Bouquet", an old watercolour floral.

"Essential Garden Treasure"

"Essential Garden Seed"

And finally here are two pieces from the "Essential Garden" series. Again they hold an aha-moment for me as working on them I developed a monotyping technique that I now use pretty often. This way I reintroduced handprinting into my work. After I hadn't used it for years – a kind of full circle moment. I truely believe that nothing is wasted and everthing we once did shapes what we do today, in art and in life.

You can see these and some more of my work here on Minted (works by Eva Marion):

Through the competition Minted looks for pieces to add to their wall art collection.

"Artists around the world" bloghop

Now it's my turn now in this bloghop, linking artists around the world :-) We have been asked 4 questions about our work and work process and post our answers on our blogs, then linking up to the next artists.

Let me quickly introduce myself first, I am Eva Marion Seyffarth, a surface designer and illustrator from Germany working under the studio name "Eva twinkles".

I have been invited to this hop by my friend and collague Vivayne, a freelance artist from Las Vegas. Please check out her lovely work here and blog here!
Here's a set of plates she did, which I love for it's softness and dreamy atmosphere:

"A joyous time", copyright Vivayne.

And here are my answers to the 4 bloghop questions:

1. Why do I do what I do?
Well I felt drawn to be an illustrator and designer as long as I can think. The creative process is something that comes very naturally to me, creating is just what I do, as simple as that. But if you dig deaper I guess it's mostly the freedom that comes with it: you get to create your own world, and I LOVE that.

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?
Ok, the good old style question … I think what sets me apart is textures and translucency. It's as well my foundation in traditional art, married together with all the digital possibilities we have nowadays. I am a very haptic person and love to make a mess with paint or handprinting techniques. I have a background in handprinting, and have been painting with watercolours since childhood. My father is a landscape watercolour painter and often took me out on painting trips into the forest or the fields, and  I guess that really has shaped me.
On subject matter, I am mostly inspired by nature – often by organic structures in plants and landscape but as well by flora and fauna and landscape in general. Next biggest inspiration is words, storytelling and folk tales.

done with monoprints + Illustrator

Papercut motifs, which then were monoprinted
and used for the "Essential Garden" collection

3. How does my creative process work?
Like said above, I always start by hand, with pen on paper or scissors or paint or printing ink. I nowadays work with gouache rather than with watercolour as the colours are more saturated and I love that you can go from translucent to pastose colours with it. When it comes to printing, I often work with papercuts and print them as monoprints. I am a classic case when it comes to sketchbooks too. I take mine everywhere with me, and scribble down ideas or inspirational stuff. Very often it's a sketch from my sketchbook that is the starting point for my work. I usually just start working on single motifs and bits that come to my mind for my theme till I get to saturation point. I then scan everything in and do my composition and additional elements in Photoshop and/or Illustrator.

4. What am I working on now?
I have just finished my piece for the first round of Lilla Roger's Global Talent Search. Unfortunately I can't show the piece yet … but you can see some work in progress pics in my previous blogpost.
I am as well working on editorial illustrations, to build up my portfolio. Doing Lilla Rogers' MATS courses has rekindled my love of this field and I would like to get more commissions in that market.
Last but not least I am working on a makeover of my website. So much has happened since I first published it about a year ago! My work has changed and evolved to be more "me" and I will be tearing down almost all the pieces I had on the site, replacing them with new work. It's totally scary, but feels good too. It's about time!

And now let's travel on up to the north of Europe … please check in on the following monday, the first of September, to see what my collagues from Scandinavia have to say on their blogs!

Sanna Väätänen is a painter, photographer and illustrator from Finland. I love this inventive cuckoo clock design that she has done for a phone cover, it is a witty and very unique interpretation of the theme:

See more of her illustrations here and please check in at Sanna's blog for her "Artists around the world" post on the first of September!

Simi Gauba is a pattern and product designer originally from India, but now based in Sweden. Here's a print that is available in her Society 6 store – I have to tell you it was a difficult choice, there's so much beautiful designs in that shop! But I especially love this print for it's boldness and inventive typography:

MATS Bootcamp 2: Sweet Cities

Hello, playing serious catch up now …
These are my designs from MATS Bootcamp 2, from March. We were briefed to design a collection for bolt fabric, with the theme of Jell-O and Jell-O molds. Oh my. I have to confess that I didn't like it at all! I guess it's really an american thing. Lots of my classmates said how the theme brought back sweet memories from their childhood. Well, Jell-O was never big in Germany! And frankly when gathering inspiration I just felt that these wobbly desserts in highly artificial colours look … umm … ugly. Feel free to have a look at my Pinterest board to see for yourself, maybe you like them?

My only positive association was of skyscrapers made of sweets, and following this, I thought of New York, a night out at a theatre show and visiting a glamourous café on Fifth Avenue afterwards.  Although I have no idea if there is such a café …?

Anyway, I came up with these designs and looking back at them now, I quite like them because of the loose painting style. Although I guess I went a bit over the top with the theme, too much storytelling for a classic kitchen fabric …

An update and a lot of paint … ein Update und viel Farbe

Sorry for being so quiet lately! The reason is nothing special really, just an unlucky combination of a bad flu followed directly by a super busy time. So I fell off the blog train, and once I started postponing, it just went on and on … A bit stupid really, because I've got lots to show: my designs from the Lilla Roger's Assignment Bootcamp in March and May … and lots of new work for Part B of Lilla's Make Art That Sells course in April … and some more garden stories to share … so there will be more posts coming up soon!

For now I'll leave you with some spontanious painting pieces of mine. I did these following a project of my collague Gill Eggleston: do one small piece (A6) of handpainted work per day, in a quick and spontanious way, and not spending longer than 20 minutes on it. I managed to follow along for a week – well, before the flu and that extrabusy time ;-) But I plan to return to it soon, it is a very good exercise to get your creative juices flowing. Although I am quite sure I won't manage to do one per day. About 2-3 per week would be a good goal for me. Let's see …
In the last weeks I tried out lots with handpainted designs. I challenged myself to explore the possibilities – there are some pitfalls that come with it (like it's timeconsuming, it's not so easy to change and to adapt to customer's wishes …) but on the other hand it is more special than the usual computerbased work. You will see more painterly work soon!

MATS: Week 1 – gone berrypicking … 1.Woche: bin Beeren pflücken

So … here's my first week in the Lilla Rogers Studio School!
The first assignment was designing for bolt fabric with a vintage kitchen theme. Lilla always gave us a "mini" to do first, a little assignment to ease us into the big one (not knowing yet what the big one was about – it was then postet on wednesday). First week's mini was to study, draw or paint berries and Pyrex style casseroles.

The other half brought me some wild berries from a hike and I loved drawing them. I had decided to experiment during the course, so I tried out a lot of different materials and approaches. Then did the same with the casseroles/ dishes (found on Pinterest).

My studio floor quickly was covered with my collection of drawings!

After the big assignment was revealed, I scanned in a selection of my drawings and started to work on it in Illustrator. There were some moments when I thought I would never get it together! All these different kinds of drawings plus some painted bits plus some calligraphy …

But I simply worked on, determined not to give up in the first week already! And slowly a pattern started to peek through the chaos :-) Remembering Lilla's advice to try out a colour story that was unusual for us I went for strong colours and a dark background … and loved the sudden colour pop!
My main print called "Berrypicking" was ready. I then added two more patterns as coordinates, see above.

On a second thought – and after Lilla's review of our first week's work – I realized that I got carried away by the berry theme. There should have been more Pyrex and less berries in my pattern to make it feel more vintagey. I guess I will branch out from this one … I can see two collections coming up: one with Pyrex and other kitchen accessories and one all about berries and berrypicking :-)
To be continued with week 2 …

I am at school! Ich bin in der Schule!

Hi everybody, did you wonder where I got off to? Pretty quiet around here … that's because I am a student at the Lilla Rogers' Studio School! For those who don't know her, Lilla Rogers is one of the world's leading agents for illustration and surface pattern design. I am doing her online course "Make Art That Sells". So far it's been a great ride – we are now at the start of week 3 already (it's 5 weeks all together). We've done pieces for the fabric bolt market and for home decor and this week it's the children's book market! Phew. Lots of work. But it's totally great to stretch one's wings again and dive into it and "get cracking"! That's what Lilla says. I love these words and I am sure they will stick with me. Just do!

Ich nehme an ihrem Online Kurs "Make Art That Sells" teil. "Get cracking!" Einfach machen!

I as well love the community of artists that are doing this course, from all over the world and at different levels in their career. A good mix and everybody is helping and sharing, so lots to learn not only from Lilla (who's a great teacher to my opinion), but from my fab classmates as well.
I will certainly show you some of the work from the course in this blog, but later on … right now I am just too busy busy busy! Well with everything else that's going on around here … there's more to tell about that as well, again: later … so bear with me!

Versprochen!

For now I'll just show you some work in progress pics. It's fun to get my hands dirty with paint again and my studio looks like a mess … but see for yourself!
And the first pic? Well that's me, age 6, just starting school. I was sooo curious, and so happy to go to school. I loved to learn and to discover new things. I didn't like school so much anymore when I got older, but at that age all this was just a big adventure! As I am doing this course I want to get into that spirit again. Not think too much about the outcome, not about work and career and money, just experiment and enjoy! I am happy to be a student at this school :-)

Passion for pattern bloghop … and some thoughts on style … und ein paar Stil-Gedanken

Welcome to all bloghoppers, joining me from the inspirational blog of Zoe Attwell. This bloghop catches me at an important moment, in the wake of the first show that I will participate in as surface designer! Like some other bloggers of this hop I am a guest designer for Believe Creative Studio at the upcoming Indigo fair from 19-21 September in Paris. Well experienced dutch Believe Creative Studio is specialized on baby, children and junior designs.

September in Paris teil. Das niederländische Believe Creative Studio ist auf Designs für Babys, Kinder und Teenager spezialisiert.

Now that my designs are sent off, there has been a little time for reflection about style and my journey into surface design. It has been a rather unexpected but inspirational one! When I started studying surface design I was dreaming of beautiful flowery patterns and working from nature, about elegant ornaments, about geometrics, about patterns inspired by oriental tiles or tribal woven designs. Well … that hasn't happened!

What happened was my love of illustration getting in the way! You see, illustration has been my first love, and the reason why I studied "visual communication" all those years ago.
At first, when I found quirky drawings and little characters peeking up in my patterns, I was a bit irritated – this was not going the way that I had planned! Then, with the encouragement to find our own style, I decided to go along with it.

Was passiert ist?

Now this finally led me to what I have done in the last months … working for children's fashion is not what I had planned, but I certainly enjoy it very much!

All my designs for Indigo are top secret stuff, so unfortunately it is not possible to share them here … But if you happen to be at Indigo next week, make sure you visit Believe Creative Studio, stand 5U49 and find my designs within a fab collection of 17 international designers!
