New originals in my Etsy shop!

Over the last days I filled up my Etsy shop with new listings. Some are older paintings, some pretty recent.
I've had a serious studio sorting – just the thing one does before springtime starts I guess! Feels good to get things out of the drawers. Half way through this I realized that do this (and maybe need to do it!) to invite new work in.

For now here's some of my new listings:

First up here are two smaller watercolours that tie together well. "Color Energy 1" and "Color Energy 2" inject a generous dose of fresh colour to energize a room after the long grey winter.

And here is another floral watercolour – with a softer vibe this time:

"Soft Summer Bouquet" is great to bring an informal, relaxing summer mood to any room.

And I now have a new section for kids in shop! For now it is just three paintings, but I hope to grow it over this year. Here's one of the new listings: "The Adventurers" – they originally were painted as a placement design for kid's fashion but I think my little animal pirates are great for wall art as well.

Tiger for sure is the captain. No adventure will escape his brave heart and sharp green eyes!

Little Rosella Piggie always looks on the bright side of pirate life and has a smile and joke for everybody, even in bad or dangerous situations …

and Benno the dog is a faithful and strong sidekick, the best friend any pirate could have!

Happy Halloween everybody!

Just a quick note to share my last #Inktober drawing! Challenge completed and I didn't miss a day :-) Will show you my whole inky week 4 on Monday. Right now I am too busy giving out treats and preparing stuffed pumpkins, and generally being spooky :-) Happy Halloween everybody!

#Inktober, week 3

Hello, here' s week 3 of my inky october! I love how my sketchbook is filling up. I'll be calling this one my "book of ideas" :-)

Seeing lots of Christmas decorations in the shops (already!!!) made me think of Christmas carols. I could just stop myself giving wings to the singing girl … no way! It's only mid October.

No idea why I love painting horses? They come up every now and again. Probably I am drawn to their movement and the feeling of travel and freedom they evoke …

On Tuesday I doodled some folksy flowers … and that kind of set the theme for the rest of the week. Once hooked, one idea led to another. I will certainly work on further with some of these …

Now onwards to week 4 …Halloween week! I bet there will be some spooky stuff coming up …

Bootcamp 2: The Storyteller... die Geschichtenerzählerin

Here we have the finished painting of the February Bootcamp from Lilla Rogers Studios School. We were supposed to get inspiration from scenic plates and paint our idea on wood.

Hier haben wir das fertige Gemälde des Februar-Bootcamps der Lilla Rogers Studios School. Wir sollten uns von Motivtellern inspirieren lassen und unsere Idee auf Holz umsetzen.

I had the idea of a far away kingdom in the wild or a nomad tribe. In the end I chose to paint the motive "the storyteller" out of the sketches. I would like to paint the other two as well someday. I was really fond of the fantasy like atmosphere of the paintings.

Ich hatte die Idee von einem fernen Königreich in der Wildnis oder einem Normaden-Stamm. Schlussendlich hatte ich mich von drei Skizzen für das Motiv "die Geschichtenerzählerin" entschieden.

Hier ist ein genauerer Rückblick auf die drei Skizzen und den Arbeitsprozess.

MATS Bootcamp 2: Sweet Cities

Hello, playing serious catch up now …

These are my designs from MATS Bootcamp 2, from March. We were briefed to design a collection for bolt fabric, with the theme of Jell-O and Jell-O molds. Oh my. I have to confess that I didn't like it at all! I guess it's really an american thing. Lots of my classmates said how the theme brought back sweet memories from their childhood. Well, Jell-O was never big in Germany! And frankly when gathering inspiration I just felt that these wobbly desserts in highly artificial colours look … umm … ugly. Hallo, hier geht es weiter mit dem Aufholen …

Wir sind jetzt im März, und das sind meine Designs vom MATS Bootcamp Teil 2. Wir bekamen die Aufgabe, eine Kollektion für Stoff zu designen, und das Thema war Jell-O und Jell-O Formen. (Jell-O ist das amerikanische Pendant zu Wackelpudding.) Oh jeh. Ich muß zugeben, daß mir das Thema überhaupt nicht gefiel! Wahrscheinlich ist das was echt Amerikanisches … viele meiner Klassenkameraden waren begeistert und erzählten, daß das Thema für sie schöne Erinnerungen aus der Kindheit weckte. Naja, ok, Wackelpudding war nie ein so großes Ding in Deutschland! Und als ich mich nach Inspiration umsah, merkte ich immer mehr, daß ich diese wackeligen Nachtische in bunten und künstlichen Farben eher … naja … häßlich fand. My only positive association was of skyscrapers made of sweets, and following this, I thought of New York, a night out at a theatre show and visiting a glamourous café on Fifth Avenue afterwards.  Although I have no idea if there is such a café …?

Meine einzige positive Assoziation waren Wolkenkratzer aus Süßigkeiten, und dann dachte ich an New York und ein glamouröses Café auf der Fifth Avenue, in dem man den Abend nach einer Theatervorstellung ausklingen läßt. Allerdings habe ich keine Ahnung ob es ein solches Café wirklich gibt …? 

Anyway, I came up with these designs and looking back at them now, I quite like them because of the loose painting style. Although I guess I went a bit over the top with the theme, too much storytelling for a classic kitchen fabric …

Und diese Designs sind dann aus der Wolkenkratzer-Idee entstanden. Wenn ich sie mir jetzt mit Abstand ansehe, gefallen sie mir doch ganz gut, vor allem wegen des lockeren Malstils. Allerdings glaube ich, daß ich doch etwas zu weit vom Thema abgeschweift bin. Zuviel Geschichtenerzählen für einen klassischen Küchenstoff …

An update and a lot of paint … ein Update und viel Farbe

Sorry for being so quiet lately! The reason is nothing special really, just an unlucky combination of a bad flu followed directly by a super busy time. So I fell off the blog train, and once I started postponing, it just went on and on … A bit stupid really, because I've got lots to show: my designs from the Lilla Roger's Assignment Bootcamp in March and May … and lots of new work for Part B of Lilla's Make Art That Sells course in April … and some more garden stories to share … so there will be more posts coming up soon!

Es war ganz schön ruhig hier im Blog in letzter Zeit, tut mir leid! Eigentlich gibt es keinen besonderen Grund, außer einer ekligen Grippe, direkt gefolgt von einer extralangen To-do-Liste. Und ist man einmal draußen, und fängt an, das Blogschreiben zu verschieben, geht's gern so weiter … tja … Ziemlich dumm, denn eigentlich habe ich viel Neues zu zeigen: meine Designs, die im Assignment Bootcamp von Lilla Rogers im März und im Mai entstanden sind … und für den April neue Arbeiten aus dem 2. Teil von Lillas Make-Art-That-Sells Kurs … und ein paar neue Gartengeschichten … in der nächsten Zeit wird es hier also viel Neues zu lesen geben.

For now I'll leave you with some spontanious painting pieces of mine. I did these following a project of my collague Gill Eggleston: do one small piece (A6) of handpainted work per day, in a quick and spontanious way, and not spending longer than 20 minutes on it. I managed to follow along for a week – well, before the flu and that extrabusy time ;-) But I plan to return to it soon, it is a very good exercise to get your creative juices flowing. Although I am quite sure I won't manage to do one per day. About 2-3 per week would be a good goal for me. Let's see …

In the last weeks I tried out lots with handpainted designs. I challenged myself to explore the possibilities – there are some pitfalls that come with it (like it's timeconsuming, it's not so easy to change and to adapt to customer's wishes …) but on the other hand it is more special than the usual computerbased work. You will see more painterly work soon!

Für heute zeige ich hier einige gemalte Motive aus der letzten Zeit. Sie sind in Reaktion auf ein Projekt meiner Kollegin Gill Eggleston entstanden: eine kleine (A6) Arbeit pro Tag, schnell und spontan in höchstens 20 Minuten gemalt. Eine Woche lang habe ich das geschafft – naja, bevor das mit der Grippe und der extralangen To-do-Liste anfing ;-) Ich würde aber gern damit weitermachen, es ist wirklich eine gute Übung um in Schwung zu kommen. Aber eine Arbeit pro Tag ist mir sicher zu viel, so 2-3 pro Woche wären schon prima. Mal sehen …

In der letzten Zeit habe ich viel mit malerischen Designs ausprobiert – um die Möglichkeiten auszuloten. Manches ist damit nicht so einfach (es ist z.B. zeitaufwändig, und die Designs lassen sich nicht ganz so einfach verändern und den Kundenwünschen anpassen …) aber andererseits sind handgemalte Designs im Computerzeitalter etwas Besonderes. Mehr Handgemaltes bald!

Start of the Garden Season … Saisonstart im Garten!

* Die Gartensaison steht vor der Tür. Sei gut vorbereitet!

The Headgardener has been working hard on it for quite a while already … preparing for the garden season! He's been planning, ordering plants, sowing, repotting and – most important – enhancing the soil with organic fertilizers and all other kinds of good things.

Der Chefgärtner arbeitet ja schon eine ganze Weile daran … der Start der Gartensaison will gut vorbereitet sein! Er hat geplant, Pflanzen bestellt, ausgesäht, Pflanzen umgetopft und – besonders wichtig! – er hat den Boden mit organischem Dünger und anderen guten Sachen "getunt".

























The Undergardener has mainly listened to plans and schemes and admired all the activity. Mainly. Except for the moments when she found nice things like horse dung pellets and earthworm eggs in the kitchen …
Well the local blackbirds certainly love it. (And I have to report that our soil is home to the biggest earthworms I have ever seen!) The plants love it too, judging from the lush jungle that grew on our rooftop garden last year. This year I have been promised an even lusher season – looking forward to it!

Die Gärtnersgehilfin hat sich alle Pläne und Strategien angehört und alle Aktivitäten bewundert. Meistens. Außer, wenn sie so nette Sachen wie Pferdedung-Pellets und Regenwurmeier in der Küche entdeckte …
Also die Hausamseln lieben es schon mal. (Und ich kann berichten, daß unser Boden die größten Regenwürmer beheimatet, die ich je gesehen habe!) Die Pflanzen lieben es auch, wenn man nach dem üppigen Dschungel geht, der letzten Sommer unseren Dachgarten zuwucherte. Und dieses Jahr wurde mir eine noch üppigere Saison versprochen – ich bin gespannt!
