Old and new and a contest … Altes und Neues und ein Wettbewerb

When recently sifting through my studio stuff I stumbled upon an old folder with watercolour works and monotype prints that I did quite some time ago. Turned out I still love lots of them, so I decided to submit them to the Minted "For Art's Sake" competition. Along with some newer pieces. I really enjoy seeing old and new together!

Als ich neulich durch meine 7-Sachen im Studio schaute fand ich eine Mappe mit alten Aquarellen und Monotypien. Ich mag immer noch viele davon, und so habe ich sie zum "For Art's Sake" Wettbewerb auf Minted eingereicht. Zusammen mit einigen neueren Arbeiten. Mir hat es richtig Spaß gemacht, Altes und Neues zusammen zu sehen!

"Cloud Symphony Ring of Beara Ireland"

"Cloud Symphony Donegal Ireland"

Here are two watercolour landscapes, part of my Irish "Cloud Symphony" series. Although they're different to what I mostly do nowadays I don't feel they're outdated. I can well imagine taking my watercolours and brushes out for a hike in the valley to do some river landscapes … hoping to do that soon! For me landscapes are good when they manage to transport feelings and evoke the atmosphere of the place. Hoping that I managed to do this with these works!
Landscape painting will always be close to my heart as it's very much where I come from as an artist. My father is a watercolourist and I spent many happy childhood days painting together with him somewhere in the forest or the fields.

Hier sind zwei Landschafts-Aquarelle, die zu meiner irischen "Cloud Symphony" Serie gehören. Auch wenn sie nicht das sind, was ich heute meistens mache, kommen sie mir nicht verstaubt vor. Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, mit Pinsel und Aquarellkasten bewaffnet rauszufahren und Flußlandschaften zu malen … das müßte ich wirklich mal wieder machen! Landschaftsbilder finde ich immer dann richtig  gut wenn sie es schaffen, Gefühle zu transportieren und die Atmosphäre des Ortes zum Leben zu erwecken. Ich hoffe, diese hier schaffen das!
Landschaftsmalerei wird mir immer am Herzen liegen – weil hier meine künstlerischen Anfänge zu finden sind. Mein Vater ist Aquarellmaler und in meiner Kindheit habe ich viele glückliche Stunden mit ihm zusammen draußen im Wald oder in den Feldern verbracht und vor Ort gemalt.

This is a monotype printed from my own photography. Back in the old days I loved to experiment with all kinds of handprinting. I think it goes along well with the next piece, my little collection of seaweeds, done just some weeks ago.

Das hier ist eine Monotypie, von meiner eigenen Fotografie gedruckt. In der guten alten Zeit habe ich gern mit allen möglichen Handdruck-Techniken herumexperimentiert. Ich finde, sie paßt gut zum nächsten Bild, einer kleinen Seetang-Kollektion, die ich gerade mal vor ein paar Wochen gemalt habe.

"Garden of the Seven Seas"

I love the idea of painting collections and play with the thought to do more of these soon.
Ich finde die Kollektions-Idee gut und spiele mit dem Gedanken, bald mehr "gesammelte Motive" zu malen.

 

"Autumn Fire Fern"

The piece above is a real mix of old and new. It's based on an old monotype of fern leaves found here in the Lahn River Valley. I scanned the monotype in and manipulated it digitally.

Das Bild oben ist ein wirklichen Mix von alt und neu. Sie basiert auf einer alten Monotypie von Farnen, die hier an der Lahn wachsen. Ich habe die Monotypie eingescannt und dann digital weiter bearbeitet.

"Cactus Night"

"Cactus Night" is one of my fave pieces from this year. It holds a little aha-moment as it's made of elements that I did for three different assignments from the MATS courses and last year's Global Talent Search. One of the great learnings from Lilla Rogers and the MATS courses is to work in icons and combine them digitally. Love the freedom that you can have with this approach! I too love this piece's combination of watercolour, papercut, monotype and drawing. It feels 100% me and I am looking forward to more works with this style.

"Cactus Night" ist eines meiner Lieblingsmotive aus diesem Jahr. Es ist mit einem kleinen Aha-Moment verbunden, denn es besteht aus Elementen, die ich für drei verschiedene Aufgaben aus den MATS Kursen und der Global Talent Search 2014 gestaltet hatte. Ein Ergebnis der MATs Kurse ist das Arbeiten in einzelnen Bildelementen, die dann digital kombiniert werden. Ich genieße die Freiheit, die man dadurch hat! Und ich liebe hier auch die Kombination aus Aquarell, Scherenschnitt, Monotypie und Zeichnung. Die ist wirklich 100% "ich" – in diese Richtung möchte ich weiter arbeiten.

And I think it's fun to see that the "Cactus Night" goes along well with my "Soft Summer Bouquet", an old watercolour floral.
Und es ist schön zu sehen, daß die "Cactus Night" gut zu meinem "Soft Summer Bouquet" paßt, einem alten Blumenaquarell.

And finally here are two pieces from the "Essential Garden" series. Again they hold an aha-moment for me as working on them I developed a monotyping technique that I now use pretty often. This way I reintroduced handprinting into my work. After I hadn't used it for years – a kind of full circle moment. I truely believe that nothing is wasted and everthing we once did shapes what we do today, in art and in life.

Und zum Schluß kommen hier noch zwei Motive aus der "Essential Garden" Serie. Auch sie sind mit einem Aha-Moment verbunden, weil ich bei der Arbeit daran eine Monotypie-Technik entwickelt habe, die ich heute oft benutze. Nachdem ich Handgedrucktes für ewige Zeiten nicht mehr verwendet hatte. Da schließt sich dann der Kreis! Ich bin mir sicher, daß nichts umsonst ist. Alles, was wir früher gemacht haben, beeinflußt auch immer das, was wir heute tun. In der kreativen Arbeit ebenso wie im Leben.

MATS Bootcamp 4: Seafood for Homedecor … Meerestiere fürs Zuhause

I really don't like creepy seafood crawlies so the May assignment of MATS Bootcamp made me shiver: design a "Marine Mash Up" for plates combining crustaceans in dark colour with pretty bright patterns. But as soon as I got started I was quite enjoying my work. Weird objects are often fab to draw and to paint, and you can find something interesting in almost everything. I am calling this the "bromeliad effect" since my first MATS ;-) Back then we had to design plates for the wall with spiky and strange looking bromeliads as main motif, a project that in the end was one of my fave MATS assignments ever (you can see it here!).

Ich finde Krusten-Meeresgetier wie Hummer, Krebse und Garnelen ganz schön gruselig. Deshalb hat es mich auch erstmal geschüttelt, als die Bootcamp-Designaufgabe für Mai bekannt gegeben wurde: ein "Meeres-Mix" aus dunkel gehaltenen Krustentieren und hübschen farbigen Mustern, und das alles für Teller/ Geschirr. Aber als ich mich dann mal überwunden und angefangen hatte hat mir die Arbeit daran doch Spaß gemacht. Bizarre Dinge lassen sich oft gut zeichnen und malen, und mit ein bißchen gutem Willen kann man ja eigentlich Allem interessante Seiten abgewinnen. Seit meinem ersten MATS habe ich auch einen Namen dafür: der "Bromelien-Effekt" ;-) Damals sollten wir Wandteller mit stachligen und seltsam aussehenden Bromelien als Hauptmotiv gestalten. Ein Projekt, das am Ende zu einer meiner MATS Lieblingsaufgaben gehörte (das Design ist hier zu sehen!).

For my seafood mash up I decided that it was time to do some handprinting again so I did papercuts and printed them as monoprints.
Ich hatte mich schnell entschlossen, für meinen Meeres-Mixmal wieder mit Handgedrucktem zu arbeiten. Also schnitt ich Motive in Karton und druckte sie als Monotypien.

MATS Bootcamp 3 – Global Art Gathering Poster

I am postponing my blogpost about the last week of MATS B … today we are in Bootcamp!
The April assignment was to do a poster for the MATS Global Art Gathering that will take place in Brighton in June. To explain what it's all about I am quoting from the MATS website: "The Global Art Gathering will bring together leading experts from the art industry with artists from all over the world, to explore how to build a flourishing art/design career by making great art that is commercially viable."

I loved working on it! Here are a few work in progress pics:

As the briefing asked for a handlettered headline I started with some lettering experiments, and some (a lot of!) scribbled pages later I decided to go for brush lettering as seen above.
I knew I wanted to go for a conceptual poster and wanted to concentrate on what an art conference really is about: sharing knowledge and making connections. It took me a bit to get the right idea for the illustrations. After brainstorming I had a lot of ideas and did a lot of sketches, but didn't like them really … till I had that idea:

I am calling these "Knowlegde Swirl" and "Knowledge Net" :-)

Then I collaged it all together in Photoshop. Finally I added some line drawings for showing the venue (the Brighton Dome) and adding a bit of a seaside athmosphere. I like these little details:

Lilla Rogers and the MATS team will now pick one poster that will actually be used for the event. There's almost 300 fab posters in the gallery – I guess they will have a pretty hard time with their selection!

MATS B, 4 – Editorial

In week 4 of MATS B we learned about the market for editorial illustration and had to create a map of our hometown or surroundings, as if it was an illustration for the travel section of a magazine.

I live in a region with lots of history and old castles around, so I went all medieval! And like in the week before, I had a lot of hand lettering practise and my old nib pen came handy again :-)

Here is my finished map:

In der vierten Woche von MATS B lernten wir den Markt für Editorial (Zeitschriften-Illustration) kennen. Als Aufgabe sollten wir eine Karte unserer Heimatsstadt oder unserer Umgebung als Illustration für den Reiseteil einer Zeitschrift anfertigen.

Ich lebe in einer Region mit viel Geschichte und vielen Schlössern und Burgen, und deshalb wurde es bei mir richtig mittelalterlich … Und wie auch schon in der Woche davor konnte ich wunderbar Schriften zeichnen üben. Meine alte Zeichenfeder kam wieder zu neuen Ehren :-)

Hier ist meine Karte:

Es hat mir viel Spaß gemacht, Schrift im mittelalterlichen Stil auszuprobieren.

The Lahn River Valley is a bit like a mini version of the Rhine River Valley, so there's lots to see. It's well worth a visit – and I hope my map is a nice little taster!

Das Lahntal ist so ein bißchen wie eine Miniversion des Rheintals, und es gibt viel zu sehen. Es ist wirklich einen Besuch wert – ich hoffe, meine Karte kann dafür einen kleinen Vorgeschmack liefern!

MATS B, 3: Scrapbooking

 

The third MATS week's topic was the scrapbooking market. Not my cup of tea really … although I shouldn't say so, it's rather that I don't know if I like it or not? Scrapbooking is almost non existent in Germany. But really loved the theme: vintage correspondence combined with airships, oh wow!

Normally I prefer the paint brush over the fine liner … but this time round I stumbled upon an old nib pen that I hadn't used for a long time. And then really enjoyed drawing wonky ships and balloons with pen and ink. Learning: well I do like drawing, I simply have to make it interesting by using different/ unusual materials! 

In der dritten MATS-Woche ging es um den Scrapbooking-Markt. Eher nicht so mein Ding … obwohl ich das so nicht sagen sollte! Es geht mehr darum, daß ich nicht weiß, ob ich den Markt gut finde oder nicht? Scrapbooking gibt es Deutschland fast garnicht. Das Thema hat mir aber sehr gut gefallen: Nostalgische Korrespondenz kombiniert mit Luftschiffen, wow!

Nomalerweise greife ich ja immer zum Pinsel anstatt zum Fineliner … aber diesmal hatte ich eine alte Zeichenfeder wiederentdeckt, die ich lange nicht mehr benutzt hatte. Und es hat mir viel Spaß gemacht, damit eine ganze Flotte von schrägen Luftschiffen und Fesselballons zu zeichnen. Merke: zeichnen mag ich schon, ich muß es mir nur schmackhaft machen, wie in diesem Fall durch ungewöhnliches Zeichengerät!

Ok, and then I got my paintbrush out :-) This is as far as I got with my collection:

Ok, und dann habe ich meine Pinsel doch noch ausgepackt :-) Und soweit bin ich mit meiner Kollektion gekommen:

I especially like the dreamy atmosphere. And think it is well worth finishing. Well it might not end up in the scrapbooking market but it might make a nice set of greeting cards … or a journal cover? Or I can see it for a fabric collection as well! 

Die verträumte Atmosphäre gefällt mir hier besonders gut. Und ich glaube, es ist es wert, fertiggestellt zu werden. Wahrscheinlich landet es nicht im Scrapbooking-Markt. Aber es könnte eine schöne Grußkarten-Serie daraus werden … oder ein Notizbuch? Und ich kann es mir auch als Stoffkollektion vorstellen!

School's out! (MATS B, week 1+2) … Die Schule ist aus! (MATS B, Woche 1+2)

Border Design for a Kid's Collection, week 2 … Entwurf einer Bordüre für eine Kinderkollektion, Woche 2

I had gone back to school for 5 weeks of Make Art That Sells (MATS B). I loved it but realized quickly that for my current life/ work circumstances the slower MATS Bootcamp pace is the far better fit … oh my … (In the MATS course itself you'll do one assignment for one illustration market per week. In Bootcamp you'll do one assignment per month.)

Nevertheless I have enjoyed MATS B. The assignments were awesome and Lilla Rogers is a fantastic teacher. I have done some work I like and even if some (lots) of it is not completed yet I will certainly finish it up later on. As well there's the international community of artists coming together for these courses – always great and supportive and simply invaluable. Got to know a lot of fab people and picked up some nice tricks along the way, so no regrets :-)

I was a bit unsure at first – should I show any unfinished work?  … but then I thought ok, it won't hurt, so here it goes!

Placement Design for a Kid's Collection, week 2 … Einzelmotif für eine Kinderkollektion, Woche 2

Für 5 Wochen Make Art That Sells (MATS B) habe ich wieder die Schulbank gedrückt. Und das sehr gerne, aber ich mußte auch schnell feststellen, daß das langsamere MATS Bootcamp-Tempo für meine Lebens-/Arbeitssituation im Moment sehr viel angemessener ist … oh jeh … (Im MATS Kurs selbst bekommt man pro Woche eine Aufgabe für einen der Märkte für Illustration. Im Bootcamp ist es eine Aufgabe pro Monat.)

MATS B hat mir trotzdem viel Spaß gemacht. Die Aufgaben waren genial und Lilla Rogers ist eine fantastische Lehrerin. Ich habe ein paar gute Arbeiten produziert. Manches (vieles) ist unvollendet, aber ich werde es sicher später fertigmachen. Außerdem ist die internationale Gemeinschaft der Kreativen, die für diese Kurse zusammenkommt, immer großartig und aufbauend und ganz einfach unbezahlbar. Ich habe viele interessante Leute kennengelernt und auch ein paar gute Tricks mitbekommen, und so hat es sich auf jedenfall gelohnt.

Ich war mir ja erst etwas unsicher – sollte ich hier unvollendete Arbeiten zeigen? … aber auf der anderen Seite kann es ja auch nicht wirklich schaden … also geht es hier los:

Week 1: Paper

There's not so much to say about me in the first week … apart from that I now have some nice ideas and sketches to work with further on. Week one was all about the paper market, and the assignment was doing a Christmas card with the theme of toy trains. 

Woche 1: Papierwaren

Hier kann ich garnicht viel erzählen … außer das ich ein paar interessante Ideen und Skizzen mitnehme, die ich später weiterentwickeln kann. Unsere Aufgabe war es, eine Weihnachtskarte mit dem Thema Spielzeug-Züge zu gestalten.

Week 2: Baby Apparel 

For this we had to create a collection inspired by seaweed and seahorses. I especially enjoyed painting seaweed – it comes in so many fascinating forms and colours! Here are some of my icons:

Woche 2: Kinderkleidung

Dafür sollten wir eine Kollektion entwickeln, die von Seepferdchen und Algen inspiriert sein sollte. Vor allem die Algen haben mir viel Spaß gemacht  – es gibt da soviele faszinierende Formen und Farben! Hier sind ein paar meiner Motive:

With all these weeds I had the idea of an underwater garden. And of a little gardener and some creatures to play in the garden.

Mit all diesen Gewächsen kam mir die Idee für einen Unterwasser-Garten. Und für eine kleine Gärtnerin und ein paar Kreaturen, die im Garten spielen können.

Happy Easter everybody! I am sending you these two little hares from my sketchbook to say a quick hello before it's too late …
It's been pretty quiet around here as I've just completed 5 intensive weeks of MATS B. I now need to recover a bit ;-) … but will tell more about it and share some sketches and illustrations soon!
 
Frohe Ostern liebe Leute! Die zwei kleinen Hasen aus meinem Skizzenbuch sagen noch schnell hallo bevor es zu spät ist …
Hier war es ganz schön ruhig in letzer Zeit – weil ich gerade 5 intensive Wochen mit MATS B hinter mir habe. Ich muß mich jetzt erstmal erholen ;-) … aber bald werde ich mehr erzählen und auch ein paar Skizzen und Illustrationen zeigen!

Bootcamp 2: The Storyteller... die Geschichtenerzählerin

Here we have the finished painting of the February Bootcamp from Lilla Rogers Studios School. We were supposed to get inspiration from scenic plates and paint our idea on wood.

Hier haben wir das fertige Gemälde des Februar-Bootcamps der Lilla Rogers Studios School. Wir sollten uns von Motivtellern inspirieren lassen und unsere Idee auf Holz umsetzen.

I had the idea of a far away kingdom in the wild or a nomad tribe. In the end I chose to paint the motive "the storyteller" out of the sketches. I would like to paint the other two as well someday. I was really fond of the fantasy like atmosphere of the paintings.

Ich hatte die Idee von einem fernen Königreich in der Wildnis oder einem Normaden-Stamm. Schlussendlich hatte ich mich von drei Skizzen für das Motiv "die Geschichtenerzählerin" entschieden.

MATS Bootcamp 2 Mini: Scenic plates... Motivteller

Here are my sketches from this Februar's Bootcamp from Lilla Rogers Studio School. Our task was to get inspiration from vintage scenic plates. (I put an example from my Pinterest board here to give you an idea.)

Das hier sind meine Skizzen für das Februar-Bootcamp der Lilla Rogers Studio School. Unsere Aufgabe war es uns von alten Tellern mit Landschaftsmotiven inspiriren zu lassen. (Unten können Sie sich einen Screenshot von meinem Pinterest-Board ansehen um sich ein Bild zu machen.)


Like always, I thought it was a rather odd task but in the end it was much more fun than I had expected. I've been inspired by Björn Wiinblad and a Majolika plate with horse scenery. My sketches started with an oriental scenery but slowly became more russian like.
Now Lilla Rogers told us what our actual task is going to be: we will be painting wallart on wooden plates (real wood slices! with bark!) which I think is a pretty great idea and I'm looking forward to it!

Wie so oft fand ich die Idee etwas merkwürdig, Spaß hat es mir dennoch gemacht. Inspiriert wurde ich von Björn Wiinblad und einem Majolika-Teller mit Pferde Motiv. Am Anfang hatten meine Skitzen einen orientalichen Stil, doch die Motive wurden langsam aber immer russischer.
Jetzt hat Lilla Rogers uns unsere eigentlich Aufgabe verraten: wir werden Wallart auf Holzplatten malen (echte Baumscheiben! Mit Rinde!) was ich für eine ziemlich geniale Idee halte und ich freue mich schon darauf!
