New originals in my Etsy shop!

Over the last days I filled up my Etsy shop with new listings. Some are older paintings, some pretty recent.
I've had a serious studio sorting – just the thing one does before springtime starts I guess! Feels good to get things out of the drawers. Half way through this I realized that do this (and maybe need to do it!) to invite new work in.

For now here's some of my new listings:

First up here are two smaller watercolours that tie together well. "Color Energy 1" and "Color Energy 2" inject a generous dose of fresh colour to energize a room after the long grey winter.

And here is another floral watercolour – with a softer vibe this time:

"Soft Summer Bouquet" is great to bring an informal, relaxing summer mood to any room.

And I now have a new section for kids in shop! For now it is just three paintings, but I hope to grow it over this year. Here's one of the new listings: "The Adventurers" – they originally were painted as a placement design for kid's fashion but I think my little animal pirates are great for wall art as well.

Let me introduce you to the gang:

 

Tiger for sure is the captain. No adventure will escape his brave heart and sharp green eyes!

Little Rosella Piggie always looks on the bright side of pirate life and has a smile and joke for everybody, even in bad or dangerous situations …

and Benno the dog is a faithful and strong sidekick, the best friend any pirate could have!

Think classy, eye catching, shimmering materials. Lots of metallics, and highly decorative elements. For this theme, more is more!

Bootcamp 2: The Storyteller... die Geschichtenerzählerin

Here we have the finished painting of the February Bootcamp from Lilla Rogers Studios School. We were supposed to get inspiration from scenic plates and paint our idea on wood.

Hier haben wir das fertige Gemälde des Februar-Bootcamps der Lilla Rogers Studios School. Wir sollten uns von Motivtellern inspirieren lassen und unsere Idee auf Holz umsetzen.

I had the idea of a far away kingdom in the wild or a nomad tribe. In the end I chose to paint the motive "the storyteller" out of the sketches. I would like to paint the other two as well someday. I was really fond of the fantasy like atmosphere of the paintings.

Ich hatte die Idee von einem fernen Königreich in der Wildnis oder einem Normaden-Stamm. Schlussendlich hatte ich mich von drei Skizzen für das Motiv "die Geschichtenerzählerin" entschieden.

MATS Week 5: A hyper-lush Final … Ein hyper-opulentes Finale

In the final week of MATS part A we were working for the gift market. A large and very interesting market! Our assignment was to do a zipper bag (plus 2-3 coordinating pieces optionally) with a hyper-lush design. Hyper-lush is a trend that Lilla sees migrating from fashion down into the gift market. It basically means to throw lots of things together, and to go wild with form, colour and medium. To create a piece that gives the eye lots and lots (too much?) to see, a piece with visual opulence.

Here's the story: Our mini was to gather things we collect, and take pictures or draw these as motifs for our design. I am not a collector, often I like different things that don't really match, but it was fun to sift through my stuff, looking for inspiration. I settled on an underwater scene. I love the ocean and have gathered lots of shells and starfish over the years, as well as some little ornaments like fish and a glass seahorse. I am as well fascinated by all things pearly and glittery, like glass prisms, glitter balls, little pearls and so on. As I had a mad schedule in that week, I had to speed up the process and didn't draw anything. All the icons in this design are photographs or things scanned in or vintage illustrations, combined and manupulated in Photoshop.

In der letzten Woche von MATS, Teil A haben wir uns mit der Geschenke-Branche beschäftigt. Ein großer und sehr interessanter Markt! Unsere Aufgabe war es, ein Täschchen für Kleinigkeiten (und wenn wir wollten, 2-3 dazu passende Produkte) mit einem hyper-opulenten Design zu gestalten. Hyper-Opulenz ist ein Trend, von dem Lilla glaubt, daß er sich von der Mode bis in die Geschenke-Branche ausbreiten wird. Grundsätzlich heißt das, ganz viele Elemente zusammen zu mixen, und es mit Formen, Farben und dem Medienmix zu übertreiben – sodaß ein Design mit visueller Opulenz entsteht, das dem Auge sehr sehr viel (zuviel?) zum Anschauen gibt.

Für unsere Mini-Aufgabe sollten wir Dinge zusammensuchen, die wir sammeln, und diese als Motive für unser Design fotografieren oder einscannen oder zeichnen. Ich bin keine wirkliche Sammlerin, mir gefallen die verschiedensten Dinge, aber es hat Spaß gemacht, meinen Krimskrams nach Inspiration zu durchforsten. Ich habe mich dann für eine Unterwasser-Szene entschieden. Ich liebe das Meer und habe über die Jahre viele Muscheln und Seesterne zusammengesammelt, und auch ein paar Fischfiguren und ein Glas-Seepferdchen. Und ich mag auch alles was schimmert und glänzt und nach Perlmutt aussieht, wie z.B. Glasprismen, Discokugeln, kleine Perlen und so weiter. Und weil ich in dieser Woche eigentlich überhaupt keine Zeit hatte, mußte ich diesmal besonders schnell arbeiten und habe deshalb nichts gezeichnet. Alle Elemente in diesem Design sind entweder fotografiert oder eingescannt oder es handelt sich um Vintage-Illustrationen, alles mit Photoshop zusammengebaut und verändert.

I'll have to admit that I wasn't so happy with this theme at first. But I quickly realized that it is very fun to exaggerate. And the outcome? Well, I am still not sure if I like my design. I feel it is either cool or downright horrible … depending on my mood … Anyway, this assignment gave me lots of ideas to try out later on: integrating photography is something I want to explore further, as well as mixing different mediums and designing with vintage ephemera.

I was sad and relieved at the same time that part A was over now. Like Lilla says herself, it is a bootcamp. It takes over your life. I absolutely loved every minute of it – and now I need some time to digest it all! But I am happy that it's not really over yet… there's part B in Spring 2014 to look forward to :-)

Ich muß zugeben, daß mir das Thema erst so garnicht zugesagt hat. Allerdings habe ich schnell gemerkt, daß es schon Spaß macht, zu übertreiben. Und das Ergebnis? Na ja, ich bin mir einfach immer noch nicht sicher, ob ich mein Design gut finde … je nach Laune finde ich es manchmal cool und manchmal ganz schrecklich … Auf jedenfall hat die Woche mir aber neue Ideen geliefert, die ich weiter ausprobieren möchte: Fotografie in meine Designs einbinden, und ebenso Vintage–Illustrationen und Drucke.

Und dann war es vorbei. Ich war froh und traurig zugleich … Lilla selbst sagt ja, daß dieser Kurs ein Bootcamp ist. Das Leben an sich findet einfach nicht mehr statt. Ich habe jede Minute davon genossen – und jetzt brauche ich Zeit, um das alles zu verdauen. Aber ich freue mich, daß es doch noch nicht so richtig vorbei ist: im Frühjahr 2014 kommt MATS, Teil B :-)

MATS - Week 4: My canvas garden … 4.Woche: mein Leinwand-Garten

And now here we are in my 4th week in Lilla Rogers Studio School already! This week's focus was on Wall Art. We were to do a Wall Art piece aimed at women age 25 - 45 in two given colours plus neutrals (my colours were yellow and pink). It had to be abstracted and should incorporate at least one word and something floral.

I nearly skipped the assignment. Because I had never ever done a canvas before. I am an illustrator really and never aimed at original art. So … I let the week pass by … until Friday evening … but then I braced myself and got cracking! I was very sure that I wouldn't be able to finish in time, so I just wanted to explore and enjoy myself.

Jetzt sind wir schon in meiner 4. Woche in der Lilla Rogers Studio School angekommen! Das Thema dieser Woche war Kunst für die Wand. Wir sollten ein Bild in zwei vorgegebenen Farben plus neutralen Tönen gestalten (meine Farben waren pink und gelb). Zielgruppe: Frauen im Alter von 25 bis 45. Das Bild sollte abstrahiert sein, etwas Florales beinhalten und mindestens ein Wort. 
Ich hätte beinahe nichts gemacht. Ich hatte nämlich noch nie mit Leinwand gearbeitet. Meine Richtung war immer die Illustration und nicht die Malerei. So habe ich also die Woche ins Land gehen lassen … bis Freitag abend … aber dann habe ich mich zusammengerissen und doch noch losgelegt. Inzwischen war ich mir sicher, daß ich eh nicht mehr rechtzeitig fertig werden würde, also wollte ich einfach nur rumprobieren und Spaß daran haben.



The week's "mini" had been to gather materials for collage in our given colours. So I started the canvas with collage. But that left me pretty much clueless how to go on … I finally decided to cover the collage with gesso, trusting chance and hoping to find inspiration in the newly formed textures.

Das "Mini" der Woche war es, Collage-Materialien in unseren vorgegebenen Farben zusammenzutragen. Also fing ich erstmal mit Collage an. Danach war ich ziemlich ratlos, wie es nun weitergehen sollte … Letzendlich entschloß ich mich, mit Gesso über die Collage zu gehen – im Vertrauen auf den Zufall und in der Hoffnung, daß mich die neu entstehenden Strukturen inspirieren würden.

It worked out! I found some interesting shapes and did a quick composition with crayon. I still had no real idea what I was doing at that stage. I had no motif yet, I was just vaguely working into the direction of organic forms.

Und es funktionierte! Ich entdeckte ein paar interessante Formen und zeichnete eine schnelle Komposition mit Kreide ein. Zu dieser Zeit hatte ich noch keine wirkliche Idee, was genau ich da machte. Es gab noch kein Motiv, ich arbeitete einfach vage in Richtung von organischen Formen.



Then I started to build up the background.

Dann begann ich, den Hintergrund herauszuarbeiten.

Now my canvas garden was ready.
While working, I started to see a face in the big calyx. I ignored it – I was doing abstracted flowers, right? – but it really begged to be let out. So I gave in.

Jetzt war mein Leinwand-Garten fertig. Während ich arbeitet, hatte ich ein Gesicht in dem großen Blütenkelch entdeckt. Ich ignorierte es – ich wollte ja abstrahierte Blumen malen – aber das Gesicht gab einfach keine Ruhe. Also gab ich nach.



And this was key for me! I am a storyteller really … and now I had found my story: this painting was to be about the joy our rooftop garden brings to me, and about waking up surrounded by flowers as they sometimes almost grow into the bedroom window. I added details and some elements that came to my mind thinking of our garden: a flock of little butterflies … the blackbirds … the bees … beautiful seeds … and even the rain worms got their place! And I really started to like it :-)
Finally I added my words: "Wake up and smell the flowers" – and I was done! And much to my surprise, well before the deadline. Yay!

Und darin lag der Schlüssel für mich! Ich bin eigentlich eine Geschichtenerzählerin … und hier hatte ich nun meine Geschichte gefunden: bei diesem Bild ging es um die Freude, die mir unser Dachgarten bereitet, und darum, mitten in Blumen aufzuwachen, denn manchmal wachsen diese direkt ins Schlafzimmerfenster hinein. Die Details kamen Stück für Stück dazu, und auch einige Elemente, die mir zu unserem Garten einfielen… ein Schwarm kleiner Schmetterlinge … die Amseln … die Bienen … schöne Samenkapseln … und sogar die Regenwürmer bekamen ihren Platz. Und ich fing an, das Bild richtig zu mögen :-)
Zum Schluß kamen dann noch meine Worte dazu: "Wake up and smell the flowers = Wach werden und Blumenduft riechen" – und ich war fertig. Und zu meiner größten Überraschung sogar um einiges früher als die Deadline. Jippieh!

MATS: Week 1 – gone berrypicking … 1.Woche: bin Beeren pflücken

So … here's my first week in the Lilla Rogers Studio School!
The first assignment was designing for bolt fabric with a vintage kitchen theme. Lilla always gave us a "mini" to do first, a little assignment to ease us into the big one (not knowing yet what the big one was about – it was then postet on wednesday). First week's mini was to study, draw or paint berries and Pyrex style casseroles.

Ok … hier kommt die erste Woche in der Lilla Rogers Studio School!
Unsere erste Aufgabe war es, Designs für Stoff (Meterware) mit einem Küchenthema und mit Vintage-Anmutung zu entwerfen. Lilla hat uns immer eine "Mini"-Übung verordnet, die uns den Zugang zur großen Aufgabe erleichtern sollte (ohne zu wissen, was die große Aufgabe sein würde – die wurde uns immer erst am Mittwoch gegeben). Das Mini der ersten Woche war es, Beeren und Pyrex-Geschirr zu studieren, zu zeichnen oder zu malen. 

   

The other half brought me some wild berries from a hike and I loved drawing them. I had decided to experiment during the course, so I tried out a lot of different materials and approaches. Then did the same with the casseroles/ dishes (found on Pinterest).

Meine bessere Hälfte brachte mir Wildbeeren von einem Ausflug mit, die ich mit viel Spaß gezeichnet habe. Und weil ich mir vorgenommen hatte, während des Kurses zu experimentieren, habe ich verschiedene Materialien und Herangehensweisen ausprobiert. Dann kam natürlich auch noch das  Pyrex-Geschirr dran (Fotos davon habe ich auf Pinterest gefunden).

After the big assignment was revealed, I scanned in a selection of my drawings and started to work on it in Illustrator. There were some moments when I thought I would never get it together! All these different kinds of drawings plus some painted bits plus some calligraphy …

Nachdem die große Aufgabe klar war, habe ich eine Auswahl meiner Zeichnungen eingescannt und mich daran gemacht, in Illustrator ein Muster daraus zu entwickeln. Zwischendrin habe ich ja schon ein paarmal gedacht, daß ich das alles so garnicht zusammenkriege! Die ganzen verschiedenen Zeichnungen und auch noch gemalte Elemente und dazu noch Kalligraphie …



But I simply worked on, determined not to give up in the first week already! And slowly a pattern started to peek through the chaos :-) Remembering Lilla's advice to try out a colour story that was unusual for us I went for strong colours and a dark background … and loved the sudden colour pop!
My main print called "Berrypicking" was ready. I then added two more patterns as coordinates, see above.

Aber ich habe einfach mal weitergearbeitet … ich war entschlossen, nicht schon gleich in der ersten Woche aufzugeben! Und so ganz langsam linste dann ein Muster durch das Chaos :-) Und weil Lilla uns geraten hatte, uns für eine uns ungewohnte Farbwelt zu entscheiden, habe ich kräftige Farben und einen dunklen Hintergrund gewählt … und mich über das plötzliche Leuchten gefreut. Und mein Hauptmotiv "Berrypicking" war fertig. Dazu kamen dann noch zwei Coordinates, siehe oben.

On a second thought – and after Lilla's review of our first week's work – I realized that I got carried away by the berry theme. There should have been more Pyrex and less berries in my pattern to make it feel more vintagey. I guess I will branch out from this one … I can see two collections coming up: one with Pyrex and other kitchen accessories and one all about berries and berrypicking :-)

Im Nachhinein – und vor allem nach Lilla's Beurteilung unserer Arbeiten aus der ersten Woche – habe ich dann gemerkt, daß ich es mit dem Thema Beeren doch etwas zu weit getrieben hatte. Mehr Pyrexgeschirr und weniger Beeren wäre besser gewesen und hätte mehr Vintage-Charakter gehabt. Aber ok, daran kann man ja arbeiten … ich sehe da zwei Kollektionen: eine mit mehr Pyrex-Geschirr und weiteren Küchenaccessoires, und eine rund ums Beerenpflücken :-)

Phew. It's over! What can I say about these past 5 weeks at Lilla Rogers Studio School? It's been awesome. I've lost a lot of sleep, made messes in my studio regularly, neglected the rest of my life … but I've learned sooo much! I've enjoyed myself immensely. I've done a lot of work. I've met fabulous collagues and made new friends. There's new directions to follow, new ideas to try out and a lot of information to digest. Thanks a million Lilla!
It's been sobering and uplifting at the same time to work along very talented and very experienced classmates and to realize that there's so much more for me to learn. Thank you dear classmates, I've learned so much from all of you as well!
Now I feel slightly like being overrun by a lorry. It's been a lorry with a load of beautiful stuff in it … but I am just exhausted now. Will sort myself out, look through my new stuff and post some work for you to see soon!

Puh. Es ist vorbei! Ich weiß garnicht so recht, was ich zu den 5 Wochen in der Lilla Rogers Studio School sagen kann? Es war großartig! Ich habe viel zu wenig geschlafen, mein Studio sah permanent wüst aus, ich habe mein Leben vernachlässigt … aber ich habe sooo viel gelernt! Es hat ohne Ende Spaß gemacht. Ich habe viel gearbeitet und viel fertig bekommen. Ich habe fantastische Kollegen kennengelernt und neue Bekanntschaften geschlossen. Jetzt gilt es, neue Wege zu gehen, neue Ideen auszuprobieren und sehr viel Information zu verarbeiten. Tausend Dank Lilla!
Es war ernüchternd und aufbauend zugleich mit sehr talentierten und sehr erfahrenen Kommilitonen zusammen zu arbeiten und festzustellen, wieviel mehr es noch für mich zu lernen gibt. Danke, liebe Mitschüler, auch von euch allen habe ich so viel gelernt!
Jetzt fühle ich mich ein bißchen so, als hätte mich ein Laster überfahren. Ok, ein Laster mit einer sehr schönen Ladung, aber ich bin doch ganz schön durch den Wind. Ich muß mich erstmal sortieren, werde dann meine neuen Arbeiten durchsehen und hier sehr bald etwas zum anschauen posten!

I am at school! Ich bin in der Schule!

Hi everybody, did you wonder where I got off to? Pretty quiet around here … that's because I am a student at the Lilla Rogers' Studio School! For those who don't know her, Lilla Rogers is one of the world's leading agents for illustration and surface pattern design. I am doing her online course "Make Art That Sells". So far it's been a great ride – we are now at the start of week 3 already (it's 5 weeks all together). We've done pieces for the fabric bolt market and for home decor and this week it's the children's book market! Phew. Lots of work. But it's totally great to stretch one's wings again and dive into it and "get cracking"! That's what Lilla says. I love these words and I am sure they will stick with me. Just do!

Hallo liebe Leser, haben Sie sich gefragt, wohin ich verschwunden bin? Es ist gerade ziemlich ruhig hier … weil ich zur Schule gehe, in die Lilla Rogers' Studio School! Für die, die Lilla Rogers noch nicht kennen: sie ist eine der führenden Agentinnen für Illustration und Surface Pattern Design in der Welt. Ich nehme an ihrem Online Kurs "Make Art That Sells" teil. Ein fantastischer Trip bis jetzt! Wir sind jetzt schon am Beginn der dritten Woche (der Kurs geht über 5 Wochen). Wir haben Stoffdesigns entwickelt, Designs für den Deko- und Zuhause/Wohnen-Markt, und diese Woche geht es um Kinderbücher! Holla. Ganz schön viel Arbeit! Aber es ist schön, sich weiterzuentwickeln und einfach loszulegen. "Get cracking!" – das sagt Lilla immer. Den Ausdruck mag ich sehr und ich denke, er wird hier ein "geflügeltes Wort" werden. Einfach machen!

I as well love the community of artists that are doing this course, from all over the world and at different levels in their career. A good mix and everybody is helping and sharing, so lots to learn not only from Lilla (who's a great teacher to my opinion), but from my fab classmates as well.

I will certainly show you some of the work from the course in this blog, but later on … right now I am just too busy busy busy! Well with everything else that's going on around here … there's more to tell about that as well, again: later … so bear with me!

Ganz toll ist auch die Gruppe der Kreativen, die mitmachen. Sie kommen aus der ganzen Welt und sind auf ganz unterschiedlichen Stufen ihrer Karriere – eine gute Mischung. Man hilft sich gegenseitig weiter und teilt Arbeit, Spaß, Tipps und Tricks, sodaß es viel zu lernen gibt. Nicht nur von Lilla (die eine geniale Lehrerin ist, wie ich finde), sondern auch von meinen Kommilitonen. 

Ich zeige demnächst sicher mal das eine oder andere, was im Kurs entstanden ist. Demnächst … im Moment habe ich einfach viel zuviel um die Ohren! So drumherum passiert ja auch noch einiges … darüber will ich auch noch berichten … demnächst. Versprochen! 

For now I'll just show you some work in progress pics. It's fun to get my hands dirty with paint again and my studio looks like a mess … but see for yourself!

And the first pic? Well that's me, age 6, just starting school. I was sooo curious, and so happy to go to school. I loved to learn and to discover new things. I didn't like school so much anymore when I got older, but at that age all this was just a big adventure! As I am doing this course I want to get into that spirit again. Not think too much about the outcome, not about work and career and money, just experiment and enjoy! I am happy to be a student at this school :-)

Für heute zeige ich hier ein paar "an-der-Arbeit-Bilder". Es macht einfach Spaß, sich mal wieder die Hände mit Farbe schmutzig zu machen … und mein Studio sieht ganz schön wüst aus … voilà!

Und das erste Foto? Ja, das bin ich, mit 6 Jahren, beim Schulbeginn. Ich war total neugierig und ganz glücklich, daß es losging mit der Schule! Ich war wild aufs Lernen und wollte die Welt entdecken. Naja, später mochte ich die Schule dann nicht immer so sehr, aber in diesem Alter war das alles ganz einfach ein großes Abenteuer! Bei meinem Kurs jetzt möchte ich gern dahin zurückfinden. Nicht zuviel an das Ergebnis denken! Und nicht so viel an Arbeit, Karriere und die lieben Finanzen. Ich will experimentieren und das auch genießen. Ich bin echt glücklich, diese Schulbank zu drücken :-)
