My fellow designer Jacqueline Auvigne hosts a regular showcase of pattern designs, starting today with the theme of "monochromatic". I didn't really plan to take part this time yet (for lack of time), but then we went for a swim … A visit to our beautiful and wild lake always gets my creative juices flowing. It really is my favourite drawing spot, my open air studio, and I never go without sketchbook and pen. This time inspiration hit afterwards, at home. The resulting pattern is proof to the fact that you can find inspiration everywhere, even when hanging up the washing! Have a good summer!

Favourite drawing spot/ Mein Lieblingsplatz zum zeichnen

Auf dem Blog meiner Designkollegin Jacqueline Auvigne startet heute eine fortlaufende Präsentation von Musterdesigns, jeweils zu einem bestimmten Thema – heute ist alles "einfarbig". Mehr darüber gibt es hier auf Jacquelines Blog zu sehen. Mein "Après swim"-Design ist auch dabei. Wie oft bei solchen Briefings finde ich es faszinierend und auch inspirierend, wie unterschiedlich man an das Thema herangehen kann. Vielen Dank für die Präsentation, Jacqueline!
Eigentlich hatte ich dieses mal garnicht vor, teilzunehmen (weil mir die Zeit fehlt), aber dann kam es anders. Wir sind nämlich schwimmen gegangen … Ein Ausflug zu unserem schönen und wilden See inspiriert mich eigentlich immer. Hier zeichne ich am liebsten, hier ist mein Freiluftatelier – und ich fahre nie ohne Stift und Skizzenblock los.
Diesmal kam die Idee etwas später, als ich wieder zuhause war. Das Ergebnis ist der Beweis für die Tatsache, daß man Inspiration überall finden kann, sogar beim Wäschaufhängen! Ich wünsche einen schönen Bade-Sommer!

My Spoonflower fabric shop – Mein Spoonflower Stoff-Shop

In between working for Indigo I am reorganizing my Spoonflower Shop – that's the digital printing company where some of my patterns are already available as fabric. I plan to make more patterns available and might share more of this as the fabric swatches arrive. For now you can see an overview of the existing patterns above, available in a selection of different fabric qualities.

All these are older designs that I did before studying Surface Pattern Design. I have to confess that I deleted some of my older patterns, but I still like the remaining ones. Most of them are based on rather naturalistic watercolour illustrations, a bit "old school" really. (I love "old school", well, just sometimes!)
For me it is interesting to notice the difference: THEN I used to put part of my illustrations in repeat to give them a "second life", NOW I paint and draw with the direct aim to create motifs for patterns. Might sound a bit hairsplitting but it is a big difference in feel whilst creating!

Immer mal wieder so zwischendrin sortiere ich meinen Spoonflower Shop neu – bei dieser Digitaldruck-Firma sind einige meiner Designs bereits auf Stoff erhältlich. Neue Designs sind in Arbeit – bald mehr darüber! Ich warte schon gespannt auf die ersten Musterproben … Für heute zeige ich hier eine Shop-Übersicht, siehe oben: diese Designs sind schon in verschiedenen Stoffqualitäten erhältlich.
Es sind alles alte Entwürfe aus "Vor-Studien-Zeiten". So einiges altes habe ich dann doch rausgenommen, aber diese Designs hier mag ich immer noch. Die meisten basieren auf Aquarell-Illustrationen, eher naturalistisch und vielleicht ein bißchen "old school". (Ich mag "old school", naja, jedenfalls manchmal!) 
Interessant ist der Unterschied: DAMALS habe ich meine Illustrationen auf Rapport gebracht, um ihnen eine zusätzliche Verwendung zu geben. HEUTE zeichne und male ich Motive mit dem direkten Ziel, ein Muster zu entwerfen. Haarspalterei? Nein, das ist ein ganz anderes Gefühl beim gestalten!

My favourite design so far is probably "Poppy Seeds", created using a delicate illustration of poppy seed heads.

Mein momentaner Favorit ist wohl "Poppy Seeds", das auf einer feinen Illustration von Mohnkapseln basiert.

And these two designs have been the most successful so far: "Dragonflies dancing" and "Frog Prince".

Und diese beiden Designs haben sich bis jetzt am besten verkauft: "Dragonflies dancing" und "Frog Prince".

Seems that there is a market for watercolour/handpainted designs on Spoonflower – which makes perfectly sense to me because with the innovative digital technique even watercolours can be printed really well. Handgemalte oder Aquarellmuster scheinen sich bei Spoonflower ganz gut zu verkaufen – und das ist auch gut nachvollziehbar, denn mit der innovativen digitalen Drucktechnik werden sogar zarte Aquarellmotive beim Druck sehr gut wiedergegeben. In the studio, working … Im Studio, bei der Arbeit …

Heute ist ein Beitrag über mich auf dem Believe Creative Studio Design Blog erschienen. Ich bin einer ihrer Gast-Designer für die Indigo im September (mehr drüber in meiner Blogpost hier). Ein kleines Interview ist auch dabei, und einige Bilder und Arbeitsbeispiele. Hier kann man darüber lesen!

Working in silence – for Indigo! … Arbeit im stillen Kämmerlein – für die Indigo!

I have been silently working on my children's pattern collection. It's really a pitty that I cannot show you anything – because I am working towards the Paris "Indigo" fair from the 19th -21st of September, which is the most important show in the world for original designs for fashion.
I am happy and proud to be collaborating with the Believe Creative Studio, run by Rosa Martinez and Vincent Dekker. Please make sure you visit the stand if you are around, there will be lots of beautiful designs to see! And now the message is slowly sinking in: I AM REALLY DOING THIS! Who would have thought this about a year ago? Well, certainly not me! In fact, a year ago I didn't even know that there was a fair like Indigo. I have learnt so much in that year! It was an amazing ride and it still is. I might feel not really up to it as I am still such a newbie (most of the time), I might be fighting with my incomplete software skills (sometimes), I might know that I will be nervous without end (surely)… but I feel so inspired and I am seriously enjoying the experience!

Im stillen Kämmerlein arbeite ich Stück für Stück an meiner Kinderkollektion. Leider kann ich hier nichts zeigen – denn die Designs sind für die Messe "Indigo" vom 19. bis zum 21. September in Paris bestimmt. Die Indigo ist die weltweit wichtigste Messe für Textil- und Musterdesign im Modebereich.
Ich arbeite mit dem niederländischen Believe Creative Studio von Rosa Martinez und Vincent Dekker zusammen, und ich bin stolz und glücklich mit dabei zu sein! Für alle, die vielleicht auch auf der Indigo sind: bitte vorbeischauen, es gibt viele schöne Designs zu sehen! Die Standnummer ist: U49 in Halle 5. Mehr Infos über das Studio findet man hier auf ihrer Website. Ein großes Dankeschön geht an Rosie und Vincent dafür, daß sie mich mit an Bord nehmen!
Und nun schwant mir auch so langsam, daß ES JETZT WIRKLICH LOSGEHT! Kaum zu glauben, vor einem Jahr hätte ich an so etwas noch nicht im Traum gedacht. Ehrlich gesagt ahnte ich damals noch nicht einmal etwas von der Existenz solcher Messen wie der Indigo. Ich habe soviel Neues gelernt in diesem Jahr und so geht es wohl auch weiter. Eigentlich fühle ich mich immer noch viel zu "grün hinter den Ohren" für die Indigo …  und ich stehe auch immer mal wieder auf Kriegsfuß mit den Zeichenprogrammen … und wahrscheinlich werde ich furchtbar nervös sein, ABER: was zählt, ist die Erfahrung und die neue Inspiration!

Our E-course was a fabulous experience. The chance to study online was heaven sent for me, as there's no possibility to study Surface Design in Germany. I've learned lots and lots (an ongoing process …), really enjoyed to be part of an international, inspirational and supportive group of students and definitely found a new direction for my creative work. A big "thank you" goes to the two inspiring women who created this course: Beth Nicholls and Rachael Taylor!

The end of the course is hopefully a beginning: I am working on children's designs right now. This has been on the top of my wish list for quite a while! My little "Sunflower Fool" is already available on fabric at Spoonflower. I might have the chance to exhibit my children's patterns at Indigo Paris in September under the wings of a studio.

More plans? Yes, a lot: I hope to get my portfolio ready and online at the end of this year. I want to make more fabric designs available for purchase on Spoonflower. And I definitely want to start my own small collection. I hope to get it ready for Christmas shopping … will have to decide if it's going to be handmade or digitally printed … right now I am experimenting with handprinting.  

Oh, and yes, I would really welcome any freelance work and yes, I am looking for an agent! So much to do …

"Sunflower Fool"

Willkommen an alle Bloghopper! Ich übernehme hier von Miranda Mol und möchte Ihnen gern einen "Mustermix" zeigen. Es sind alles Designs, die ich während unseres fantastischen Online-Kurses "The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design" entworfen habe. Ich hoffe, sie gefallen! Mehr Muster und Kollektionen finden Sie auch auf der "Surface Design"-Seite dieses Blogs.

Unser Online-Kurs war eine faszinierende Erfahrung. Für mich kam die Möglichkeit, online zu studieren, genau richtig, weil man Surface Design in Deutschland "regulär" nicht studieren kann. Ich habe eine Menge gelernt (und bin noch dabei …). Es war genial, Teil einer internationalen, inspirierenden Studentengruppe, die sich gegenseitig so fantastisch unterstützt, zu sein. Und – ganz wichtig für mich – ich habe eine neue Richtung für meine kreative Arbeit gefunden. Ein großes Dankeschön geht an die beiden inspirierenden Frauen, die den Online-Kurs entwickelt haben: Beth Nicholls und Rachael Taylor!

Nun hoffe ich natürlich, daß das Ende des Kurses ein neuer Anfang für mich wird: im Moment arbeite ich an Designs für Kinder. Das war schon lange mein Wunsch! Mein kleiner "Sunflower Fool" ist schon bei Spoonflower als Stoffdesign erhältlich. Wahrscheinlich habe ich sogar die Möglichkeit, meine Arbeiten zusammen mit einem Studio im September auf der Indigo in Paris auszustellen.

Mehr Pläne? Klar, viele: Ende diesen Jahres möchte ich meinen Portfolio fertig haben und auch online stellen. Ich möchte mehr Stoffdesigns auf Spoonflower zum Kauf anbieten. Und ich möchte auf jedenfall meine eigene kleine Kollektion starten. Idealerweise sollte sie vor Beginn des Weihnachtsgeschäfts fertig sein … ich muß "nur" noch entscheiden, ob sie "handmade" oder digital gedruckt wird … im Moment experimentiere ich dafür mit Handdrucktechniken. Und klar, ich würde mich natürlich über Freelance-Jobs freuen und ja, ich suche nach einem Agenten! Viel zu tun …
