I have been debating with myself for quite a wile if I should post my assignment from MATS week 3 … You see, I don't like it so much. It's ok, but not as good as it could be … but thanks to Lilla's advice during the week I now have a lot of ideas how to make it better.
But let me begin at the beginning: week 3 of MATS was all about the children's book market. We were to do a bookcover or a spread of 2 pages for "The Language of the Birds", a rather unknown folktale from Russia. Maybe my first mistake was to take this one for granted somehow. I had done bookillustrations. I knew how to do it. So I settled quickly on a scene, and decided to go about it in my usual manner: watercolour and gouache.
Ich habe eine ganze Weile überlegt, ob ich meine Arbeit aus der 3. MATS-Woche hier wirklich zeigen soll … sie gefällt mir nämlich nicht besonders. Die Illustration ist ok, aber sie könnte besser sein. Zum Glück habe ich dank Lilla und ihren Ratschlägen während der Woche einig gute Verbesserungsideen.
Aber fangen wir mal am Anfang an: in der 3. MATS Woche ging es im den Kinderbuch-Markt. Wir sollten einen Buchtitel oder eine Doppelseite von "Die Sprache der Vögel" gestalten, einem eher unbekannten Märchen aus Rußland. Mein erster Fehler lag vielleicht schon in dem Gefühl, daß ich das leicht hinbekommen würde. Buchillustrationen hatte ich schon gemacht. Ich kannte mich aus. Also entschloß ich mich schnell, eine bestimmte Szene in meiner üblichen Technik mit Aquarell und Gouache umzusetzen.

The watercolour painting looked promising at first, but then I started on the details with gouache, and realized that I would run out of time … after all, my usual technique is a very elaborate one. I managed to finish before the deadline, but didn't have enough time to do the lettering part properly. I as well had no time to develop a border with folk ornaments to integrate a "russian folk" feeling.
Because I was running out of time, I didn't look much at what the others were doing. In fact, I felt very much like being out of the world, maybe I was in Russia really? When I finally was ready, and had a look, I was a bit shocked. Sooo much beautiful work, so fresh and so fun! And most of my classmates went for either digital or for a combination of digital and handrawn/handpainted.
It's so stupid really: my book illustration days are a long gone, in fact, nearly 15 years. At that time, there was a clear distinction between design work done on computer basis, and illustration work done by hand. So automatically I fell back into my old routine, and the thought of using the computer never crossed my mind. But it would have been so much easier – it's so much quicker and much more flexible.
I plan to rework this one and will then go for a combination of digital and handpainted. Let's see what comes out of that …
Die erste Schicht mit Aquarell sah auch noch vielversprechend aus. Aber kaum fing ich mit der detaillierten Arbeit in Gouache an, merkte ich, daß ich wohl nicht rechtzeitig fertig werden würde. Meine gewohnte Technik ist halt ganz schön aufwendig. Ich habe die Deadline dann doch geschafft. Aber ich hatte nicht genug Zeit, um mich richtig um die Schrift zu kümmern, und auch meine Idee von einem Rahmen mit russischen Folklore-Elementen mußte ich aus Zeitgründen aufgeben.
Und weil ich mit der Zeit so knapp war, habe ich mich nicht weiter darum gekümmert, was meine Klassenkameraden so machten. Ich kam mir schon wie aus der Welt gefallen vor – wer weiß, vielleicht war ich ja irgendwie in Rußland? Als ich dann fertig war, und einen Blick riskierte, war ich richtig erschrocken. So tolle Arbeiten, so frisch und es sah richtig nach Spaß aus. Und die Meisten arbeiteten entweder digital oder in einer Kombination aus digital und traditionell.

Ich hatte noch nicht einmal darüber nachgedacht den Computer zu benutzen. Aber das wäre soviel einfacher gewesen – es geht viel schneller und man ist viel flexibler.
Ich habe vor, mich da nochmal dran zu setzen und diesmal Handgemaltes und Digitales zu kombinieren. Mal sehen, wie das wird …
